Jay freshmen win 4th straight (12/09/04)

WINCHESTER — It didn’t take long for the Jay County freshmen boys basketball team to figure out losing isn’t much fun. The Patriots lost their season-opener to Delta, but won for the fourth straight time Wednesday by a 49-32 mark over the Winchester Golden Falcons.

The Patriots trailed by three at the end of the first quarter, but held Winchester to just two points in the second for a 21-14 halftime lead. They outscored the Golden Falcons in each of the final three quarters to pull away.

Heath Rigby and Brandon Buckland shared the Jay County team high of 13 points. Rigby drained three 3-pointers, while Buckland finished 5-of-5 from the free-throw line.

Zach Hummer added seven points.

Brock Edwards scored more than half of Winchester’s points, finishing with 18.

UC stops Eagles

UNION CITY — The season-opening winning streak came to an end for the West Jay seventh grade girls basketball team Wednesday as it fell 19-14 to Union City Westside. The eighth grade squad also lost, 22-17.

The Eagle seventh graders ran off four straight wins to open the season.

Brittany Muhlenkamp scored most of their points as she finished with 10. Keri VanSkyock and Kristen Selvey each added two.

West Jay’s eighth graders were deadlocked with Westside at halftime, but managed just four points in the second half. Chelsea Grady paced the team with six points, Kelci Reed added five and Jessica Piercey scored four.

EJ girls top Tigers

BLUFFTON — The East Jay seventh grade girls basketball team kept its perfect record intact Wednesday with a 34-21 victory over the Bluffton Tigers. The eighth graders got their first win of the year, 23-17.

Lindsey Wellman paced the seventh graders (3-0) with 16 points. Pazia Speed followed with eight points, and Shelby Gierhart added four.

Wellman and Speed were also the top two scorers in East Jay’s first two victories. Wellman had 14 points apiece in wins over Bellmont and Winchester, and Speed had 10 and six points respectively.

Gina Muhlenkamp scored seven points in the loss for the eighth grade team, and Kaelee Keller notched six. Brittany Mann added four points.

Keller posted 10 points in the team’s season-opening loss to Bellmont. Muhlenkamp and Kristi Morningstar were the high scorers against Winchester with eight points apiece, and Mann followed with seven.

Edmundson leads Jay

Amber Edmundson notched a double-double as the Jay County freshman girls basketball team used hot starts to each half to blast the Bluffton Tigers 42-16.

Edmundson racked up 15 points for the undefeated Patriots (4-0), who outscored Bluffton 14-4 in the first quarter and 12-2 in the third. She also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Katie Runyon had nine points and five steals. Shelby Rines finished with five points and four rebounds, and Sharon Dirksen added six boards.

Fort needs coaches

Fort Recovery Schools are looking for several coaches.
