Jay girls finish with 17-3 mark (02/01/08)

MUNCIE - The Patriots have battered most of their opponents this season. The season finale was no different.
Jay County High School's girls basketball team capped one of the best regular season's in school history Thursday with a 62-38 victory over the Host Delta Eagles.
The Patriots, which has won 14 games by double digits this year, rolled out to a 19-6 lead in the first eight minutes. They were up by 22 at halftime and cruised to the win.
Jay County finished the regular-season at 17-3, with each of their losses coming by four points to Class 4A No. 7 Fort Wayne South Side (17-3), Huntington North (13-9) and Connersville (18-2). The team ranks eighth in the state overall and third in Class 4A in average margin of victory at 22.45 points.
The best overall season in school history was turned in by the 1985-86 team, which finished 20-3.
Kaelee Keller led the Patriots, who open sectional play Tuesday at Huntington North against Fort Wayne North Side (6-13) at 6 p.m., to their final win of the regular season with 13 points. Lindsey Wellman joined her in double figures with 11 points.
Adding to the balanced scoring attack were Cassandra Huelskamp with nine points, Abby Loy and Cara Garringer with eight, Pazia Speed with seven and Amber Edmundson with six.
Alissa Calhoun led all scorers with 19 points for Delta.
Junior varsity
Jay County's JV squad also finished at 17-3, clobbering the Eagles 48-25.
Katie Butcher scored 12 points to lead the Patriots, who dominated the opening quarter for a 21-2 lead. Gina Muhlenkamp added nine points, and Makenzie Loy and Danielle Link each finished with seven.
Cierra Rench totaled eight points for Delta. Kendi Zvokel and Samantha Warpool added five points each.[[In-content Ad]]
