Jay girls win Blackford invite

HARTFORD CITY — Malarie Houck and Maria Murphy each won two  events to lead the Patriots to their second straight title.
A week after the Jay County High School girls track team rolled to the Muncie Southside Invitational crown, it out-dueled the Leo Lions Friday to take the championship at the Blackford Invitational.
The Patriots scored 164.5 points while Leo took second at the seven-team event with 152.
The JCHS boys were fourth with 61.5 points while New Haven won with 156.
Houck dominated the hurdles for the Patriots, winning the 100-meter even in 16.4 seconds and the 300 in 50.7 Morgan Link was second in the 100 in 17.1.
Murphy took the shot put by more than 5 feet with a toss of 40 feet, 1 inch. Her other victory came in the discus at 121 feet, 9 inches.
Tyler Back launched the shot put 47 feet, 9 inches, to earn the only win for the Jay County boys.
Other victories for the girls team came from Katie Simmons (3,200 run), Eme Miller (800 run), Katie Snyder (100 dash) and Ciera Barcus (high jump).

Host Starfires win
BERNE — The South Adams boys team cruised to victory, scoring 104 points to finish 22 ahead of Eastbrook at Friday’s South Adams Invitational. The Starfire girls were fourth with 56 points while Norwell took the win with 130.
The SAHS boys scored big in the 3,200-meter run, with Evan Liechty winning the event in 10 minutes, 21.68 seconds. Brody Shane was the runner-up in 10:27.67.
Joel Schmidt picked up the other victory for the Starfires with a time of 15.37 in the 110 hurdles. He was eight hundredths of a second faster than Eastbrook’s Nolan Benedict.
Runner-up efforts for the girls team came from Hannah Moore (1,600 run), Kristen Muselman (800 run) and Hannah Mitchel (shot put).

Chief girls win
East Jay Middle School’s girls team scored 125.5 points Saturday to win as it hosted the East Jay Relays. West Jay was third in the six-team field with 66, and South Adams finished last with 40.5.
EJMS finished second to R.J. Baskett (Gas City) in the boys competition with 135 points. West Jay (74) was fifth and South Adams (44) was last.
Emi Minnich paced an East Jay sweep of the girls 1,600-meter run as she won in 5 minutes, 58 seconds, ahead of teammates Megan Wellman and Sydney Mathias. Sydney Robbins took the shot put at 26 feet, 1 inch, and the Chiefs also won three relays.
West Jay’s Will Watson won the boys shot put at 40 feet, 7 inches, with teammate Bowen May in second place. Drew LeFever of South Adams took the boys discus at 118 feet, 6½ inches.
Nathan Heitkamp was second for the EJMS boys in the long jump at 16 feet, 10 inches, Lilly Rogers took second in the discus for the West Jay girls at 74 feet, 9½ inches and Caroline Kloepper was the runner-up in the 100 dash in 13.46 for the South Adams girls.[[In-content Ad]]
