Jay golfers come up big at OAC tournament (09/14/04)

JCHS roundup

ANDERSON — All any coach can ask for is to get a team’s best effort at tournament time. Jay County girls golf coach Tom Ferguson got just that.

His Patriots posted three personal-best scores, earned three all-conference honors and turned in a team-best 408 to finish third in the Olympic Athletic Conference tournament at Grandview Golf Course in Anderson Monday.

Anderson Highland, which finished second to now-departed Huntington North last season, took the title with a 368. Connersville was second with a score of 397, and Muncie Southside placed fourth in the four-team conference with a 439.

Trisha Champ set the pace for Jay County, shooting a personal-best 41 on the front nine. She followed with a 46 on the back nine for her best 18-hole score of 87.

Champ’s total placed her fourth, which was good enough to earn a spot on the all-conference first team. She finished behind match medalist Sarah Windlan of Highland (73), Katie Windlan of Highland (83) and Brittany Miller of Connersville (84).

Brianne Morrical shot a 54 on the front nine and a 52 on the back, and Katey Kohler had a 55 on the front and a 51 on the back. Their matching 106s — Kohler’s was a personal best — were good for a ninth place tie, which gave them the final two all-conference honorable mention spots.

Shonda Sutton also turned in a personal-best score of 109 to complete the team score. Alissa McMillan finished with a 125.

Jay County returns to regular-season play at home today against Blackford and Southern Wells at 4:30 p.m. before competing in the sectional tournament Saturday.

Jets stop Jay JV

MONROE — Jay County’s defense came up with two big plays, but it was not enough as the junior varsity football team took a 26-12 loss to the Adams Central Jets Monday.

The Patriot defense scored both of the team’s touchdowns, the first coming as the team trailed 8-0.

Dustin Zimmerman made a big hit to cause a fumble, and Kaleb Carpenter picked up the ball and went 30 yards for a touchdown. On the next Adams Central drive, Denny Gardner grabbed the ball after a fumble of a bad shotgun snap and ran 50 yards for another score.

Jay County missed both extra points, and the Jets went 11 plays to score with 8.8 seconds left in the first half for a 14-12 lead.

Adams Central put together touchdown drives of 15 and 14 plays in the second half while the visiting offense stayed silent.

Michael Armstrong led the Patriot offense with 72 yards on seven carries. Zach Chenoweth had 13 tackles, Andy Hughes and Alex Michael each added 10 and Dustin Zimmerman finished with nine.[[In-content Ad]]
