WINCHESTER — Jay County won again Tuesday, taking the final four matches for a 44-29 Patriot victory over the Winchester Golden Falcons.
Winchester had a 29-21 lead before Jay County won out, with senior Kurt Hess (145) securing the victory with by pinning Ryan Phenis in 5-minutes, 37 seconds. Also winning during the run were Tony McCowan (130), Nathan Daniels (135) and Matt Daniels (152).
Hess, ranked sixth in the state, scored the last of four pins for Jay County (7-2). Bill Spahr, No. 7 in the state at 189 pounds, notched the fastest of those pins, finishing off Tyler Walser in 1:34.
Tom Smith (189) put Adam McCaffrey’s shoulders to the mat in 2:36, and Casey Kenney (103) pinned Cody Henemyer in 3:01. Robert Ralston also added a victory at 160 pounds.
Norwell whacks Stars
BERNE — South Adams’ girls basketball team managed no more than eight points in a quarter and was outscored by double digits in each of the first three Tuesday in a 66-24 defeat to the Norwell Knights.
Kayla Coblentz made all of her field goal attempts for the Starfires (1-6) to lead the team with nine points. However, the rest of the team shot just 4-of-27 (15 percent).
Norwell (4-5) put four players in double figures led by Mackenzie Warwick with 15 points. Alie Donaghy had 14 points, Taylor Plummer scored 13 and Andrea Vogel added 10.
Julie Muhlenkamp followed Coblentz for South Adams with six points. She also had eight rebounds and three blocks.
Jessie Liechty grabbed five rebounds, and Andrea Moser had three steals.
The Starfires also dropped the junior varsity game, 38-20. Ashton Morgan scored seven points.
Fort defeats Cavs
FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery’s seventh grade girls basketball team allowed less than four points in each quarter in rolling to a 23-9 victory over the Coldwater Cavaliers Friday. The eighth grade Indians also topped Coldwater Tuesday, 27-23.
The Tribe seventh graders improved to 2-1 as they took a 4-0 lead in the opening quarter and were never challenged. Kendra Brunswick scored a team-best seven points, and Nicole Dilworth added five.
Nicole Pottkotter paced the Fort Recovery eighth graders in their first win of the season as she scored seven points. The Indians pushed a three-point halftime lead to eight after three periods and held off the Cavaliers in the fourth quarter.
Emily May, Kelsey Brockman, Josie Guggenbiller and Jessica Taylor each added four points.[[In-content Ad]]
