Jay gymnasts impressive in opening win at Heritage (12/18/03)

Local Roundup

All of the hard off-season work paid off.

The Jay County gymnastics team opened its season Wednesday, showing how much it has already improved since last year. That’s a lot to say of a defending sectional champion.

The Jay County Patriots got started with a 94.10-81.40 victory over the Heritage Patriots.

That team score marked a jump of more than seven points from what coach Kristin Rees’ squad put on the board last year against Heritage. Her team took first in three out of four events, two of the top three spots in every event and swept the top three in the balance beam.

Hannah Williams led the effort, earning the top score for Jay County in every event to win the all-around competition with a 33.95. She scored a 33.90 at the regional meet last season.

Williams was first in the vault, floor exercise and balance beam, leading a sweep in the beam. She scored an 8.95 on the beam with seniors Kayla Smith (7.8) and Amanda Knight (7.6) in second and third respectively.

The sophomore won the vault with an 8.75, and Knight was second with an 8.6. Her other win came with an 8.5 in the floor exercise, and junior Melissa Fifer was third with a 7.35.

Williams added a second-place finish on the uneven bars with a 7.75, and freshman Lacey Thornburg was third with a 7.0.

The other top-three finish for Jay County on the day came from junior Lacey Grider, who placed third in the all-around at 26.05.

Jay County also dominated the junior varsity competition with a 71.8-46.5 victory. It won every event, with four different gymnasts scoring victories.

Smith was first on the bars with a 6.5, and Fifer took the balance beam win with a 5.45. Freshman Kristin Brown won the floor competition with a 7.1, and sophomore Brittany Bauman took the vault with a 7.55.

Sophomore Heather Stevens finished second on the beam on the way to a top all-around score of 22.05.

Jay County will be in action again Saturday at the Richmond Invitational at 11 a.m.

EJ blasts the Jets

East Jay’s seventh grade boys basketball team stayed perfect with a 52-18 victory over Adams Central Tuesday. The eighth grade team also picked up a win, jumping over the .500 mark by beating the Jets 56-25.

Eleven different players scored for the seventh grade Chiefs as they improved to 5-0.

Dexter Shreve paced the team with 12 points, and Adam Garringer added 11. Lance Franklin finished with nine points.

The eighth graders (3-2) got 18 points from Michael Jobe and 13 from Clint Muhlenkamp. Aaron Daniels added five points.
