Jack Wood is preparing for the 2007-08 season. After all, games are just a month away.

The Jay County High School softball coach of course has his sights set on the spring, when the Patriots will try to build off their best season in his tenure. And to help get them do so he's getting his girls, and he hopes many from other area teams as well, on the field this fall.

The JCHS softball program will host a six-week fall league for seventh through 12th graders, with games set to begin Sunday, Aug. 26.

Wood had fielded a team to play in the Blackford Fall League for several seasons, but he said he hopes a league in Jay County will provide an outlet for even more participation.

"I thought it would give more of our players an opportunity to play," Wood said. "I think it'll give the younger girls ... a chance to be around some of the older girls. It'll give our program ... kind of another season to be on the field."

In addition to his own team, Wood said he especially hopes to draw players from nearby rivals South Adams and Fort Recovery. The Jay County league will also look for participation from other schools in the surrounding counties.

Each team will play two games per Sunday, beginning Aug. 26. Games will not be played on Labor Day weekend, and there are no practices.

The entry fee for the league is $85 per player, and each player will receive a team and league T-shirt. Registration forms must be turned in by Saturday, Aug. 11.

Forms are available at JCHS or by calling Wood at (765) 369-2035 or (260) 729-2746.[[In-content Ad]]
