Jay jumps to fourth in state poll (04/22/03)

JCHS Roundup

After starting the year unranked and receiving no votes, the Jay County baseball team has made an impression.

The Patriots, tied for ninth in last week’s voting, jumped all the way to a tie for fourth after racking up four more wins. The week included wins over Marion, Wapahani and a pair over Olympic Athletic rival Connersville.

Jay County came back from a seven-run deficit to beat the Giants and a six-run deficit to defeat the Spartans in the second game of a Saturday double-header. It also eked out the win against Wapahani on a sixth-inning game-winning home run from Cameron Hummel, and defeated Connersville 1-0 in the opener on the strength of a shut-out tossed by Josh Jellison.

At 7-0, the Patriots tied Indianapolis Chatard (9-2) for fourth in this week’s coaches’ poll with 38 points. Indianapolis Roncalli (9-0) was first, Andrean (7-0) was voted second and sectional rival Bellmont (6-1) was third.

Jay County visits Norwell, another sectional rival, today at 4:30 p.m.

Patriots pummel Bruins

The Jay County tennis team gave up just two games in varsity singles action, rolling to a 5-0 victory over Blackford (0-3) Monday.

Seniors Kristen Klatt and Kelly Hess led a couple of easy victories, sweeping Ashley Peters and Brittany Fancher off the court and No. 2 and 3 singles respectively. They walked off the courts simultaneously with 37-minute wins for the Patriots (1-2).

Daniela Harringer completed the sweep of the singles matches at the No. 1 spot with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Kat Townsend.

Julie Sours and Erin St. Myers teamed up for a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles over Trudy Valentine and Alethia Castillo by a score of 6-3, 6-2. Erin Schmiesing and Whitney Schemenaur won at No. 2 doubles over Danyelle Worster and Alyshia Gipson 6-3, 6-1.

Jay County also took the junior varsity victory over the Bruins 4-1.

Niki Guntle and Briann Morrical cruised past Lara Shank and Jess Glanay at No. 1 doubles for a 8-2 win. Chelsea Reff and Shonda Sutton took the No. 2 doubles match by default.

Stephanie Homan pulled off a big win for the Patriots, surviving a tie breaker at No. 3 singles against Lauren Edwards 9-8 (8-3). Brittany Pinkerton picked up the other JV win over Katie Ehrhart at No. 1 singles 8-5.

Amanda Hicks lost her No. 2 singles match to Jen Uggam 8-5.

Jay County starts Olympic Athletic Conference action Thursday when it hosts Muncie Southside at 4:30 p.m.

Jay loses late

The Patriots had Olympic Athletic Conference favorite Anderson Highland on the ropes, but couldn’t deliver the knock-out punch. The Scots rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Monday to top the Jay County softball team 4-3.

Anderson Highland (9-0) had owned a 2-0 lead for much of the game, but the Patriots scored three times in the top of the sixth to push ahead. However, the Scots tagged Ashleigh Myers with two runs in their last at bat to preserve their perfect record.

Myers took the loss for Jay County (2-5), allowing four runs — two earned — in seven innings. She allowed eight hits while striking out one and walking five.

Saffron Redwine and Stephanie Imel recorded the only hits for the Patriots. Redwine, Kerra Zimmerman and Renae Laux each scored a run, and Imel drove in a pair of runs while Laux punched home one RBI.

Jay County will host Daleville today at 4:30 p.m.

Pats fall just short

Every Jay County player scored in the 40s Monday against Delta, but the Patriot golf team still suffered the defeat, 173-175.

Tyler Johnston and Jesse Shawver tied for the Jay County team-best score of 43, one stroke behind match medalist Chris Clark of Delta. Alex Hunt shot a 44, Adam Foster had a 45, and Nathan McClung came in with a 49.

The Patriots (0-2) host Bluffton Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Mississinewa downs JC

The Jay County boys track team won half of the individual events Monday and took two of the three relays, but still suffered a 67-56 loss to Mississinewa.

Paul Imel was the lone Patriot to pick up two individual victories against the Indians. He was first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.6, and also won the 400-meter dash in 55.2.

Ryan Younts had won individual victory, placing first in the 800-meter run in 2:27. He also teamed with Alex Loucks, Steven Castillo and Lucas McBride to win the 400-meter relay (47.8), and joined Kurtis Hess, Adam May and Daniel Scott in taking first in the 3200-meter relay (9:49).

McBride picked up an individual win in the long jump by one inch with a leap of 17 feet, nine inches. Adam Grile won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.8, and David Stith took the shot put with a toss of 45 feet, one inch.

Jay County will take part in the Muncie Relays Saturday at 11 a.m.[[In-content Ad]]
