Tyler Rigby really seems to enjoy playing the Panthers. But Craig Teagle believes Elwood will be just one of a list of teams his senior guard is able to victimize this year.
“I think Tyler Rigby will like playing anybody this year because I think that if he’s aggressively offensively he should average about 15 a game,” said the Jay County boys basketball coach. “He’s more than capable of that. He can shoot the three, he can shoot the pull-up jump shot, he can drive all the way to the hole and he can get to the free-throw line ... So he’s got a lot to his game.”
Rigby stunned Elwood last season, hitting six 3-pointers and shattering his career high with 26 points in the Patriots’ sectional opening win.
In Wednesday’s season opener he started on fire again as he was in on each of the Patriots’ first 11 points. He scored seven on his own and assisted on a couple of buckets by Zac Green as Jay County opened an early 10-point lead on the way to a 68-41 victory.
“We knew he could do that,” said Elwood coach Kyle Hobbs. “We didn’t know he could do that in the sectional last year ... They have so many good perimeter shooters ... it’s just tough to focus your defense on one guy.”
Rigby’s early run pushed the Patriots from a 4-2 deficit to a 13-4 lead. He scored 12 of his game-high 15 points in the opening half. He also helped spread out the offense — Jay County had five players with eight points or more — as he finished with a game-best six assists.
After their 11-0 first-quarter run, the Patriots added a 14-1 stretch in the second period for a 35-17 advantage at the end of the first half. Elwood never got close, despite shooting nearly twice as many free throws as the home team.
The hot start came despite losing starting point guard Scott Bruggeman to a pair of fouls in the first 33 seconds. Rigby and sophomore Luke Goetz took over point-guard duties with good success as the Patriots ran away with the game and committed just a pair of first-half turnovers.
“We’ve had a good feeling about their team chemistry,” said Teagle. “Luke Goetz got thrown right into the fire. He went in right away and did a really good job for us in the first quarter. Everyone adjusted real well.”
Jay County was solid in all aspects of the game, shooting 54 percent from the field in the first half and 50 percent from 3-point range for the game. They also dominated the glass, 37-25.
Senior Randy Evans joined Rigby in double figures with 12 points. Corey Comer and Clint Muhlenkamp each added nine points, and Green scored eight.
Comer, who stands 6-foot-2, led the rebounding effort as he more than doubled Elwood’s 6-foot-6 Larry Nutt. Comer finished with 12 boards to Nutt’s five.
Evans added five rebounds, and Green and John Retter each had four.
“I thought there were some things we did pretty well,” said Teagle, whose squad finished with just nine turnovers for the game. “We got a lot of people playing time. We got to see what some people could do on the varsity floor for the first time, and the kids played hard.
“They played extremely hard. I’m proud of them. We got a win tonight and we’ve just got to build from this.”
Elwood (0-1) never got into any kind of offensive flow, shooting just 10-of-34 from the field (29 percent) and making just 20 percent of its 3-point tries.
Nutt blocked eight shots, but converted on just half of his 10 free-throw tries and ended the game with just five field-goal attempts.
Ryan Landrum and Damon Hughes (1-of-8 on 3-pointers) shared the Panther team high of 12 points. Nutt finished with nine points.
“We knew going in that Jay County was probably going to be one of the better teams in the sectional this year,” said Hobbs.

A close game turned into a blowout as the Patriots cruised to a 50-24 win.
Jay County trailed by two after the first quarter and was tied with the visiting Panthers at 14 early in the second. It won the scoring battle by a 36-10 count the rest of the way for the convincing win.
Rhett Retter scored a game-high 16 points for the Patriots, and Casey Waters also reached double figures with 10 points. Lance Franklin scored eight points, and Luke McClung had six.
Nate Wills had 10 points for Elwood, and three other players scored three points apiece.[[In-content Ad]]
