Jay native gets doctorate

Jay County native Emily Ronald received her PhD in religious studies this month from Boston University.
The daughter of Jack and Connie Ronald, Portland, she attended Jay County schools through grade ten then transferred to the Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and the Humanities, graduating in 1995.
She graduated cum laude from Williams College in 1999 and received her master’s degree in theological studies from Harvard Divinity School. She and her husband, Michael Veloso, and their son, Julian, reside in metropolitan Boston.
Ronald will be teaching a course on the Western literary canon this fall at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design as a member of the adjunct faculty.
Her doctoral dissertation was entitled “The Meaning of Religion: Book Clubs and the Social Inflection of Reading.”
Graduates
Lauren Haggenjos, Portland, graduated cum laude from the University of Evansville on May 4. She received a bachelor’s degree in theatre education.
New display
There will soon be a new display at the Jay County Historical Museum in Portland.
A room will be dedicated for items from Dr. Eugene and Jane Gillum, longtime Portland residents who moved to Towsley Village, 805 W. Middle St., Chelsea, Mich., 48118, to be near their daughter.
Dr. Gillum’s book “From the Ground Up” recently traveled above the earth in the International Space Station. The book was a gift to astronaut Kevin Ford.
Art show
The Blackford County Arts Center will present its 2013 Juried Art Show in July. Art work will be accepted from Jay County residents and items should be 2D medium (including photography). Work must be framed and ready to hang (no saw tooth hangers) and have been completed in the last five years.
