Jay netters pick up 2nd victory (09/03/2008)

MUNCIE - Jay County High School's boys tennis team swept the singles matches and earned its second win of the year Tuesday 4-1 over the Muncie Southside Rebels.

Kyle Simmons needed three sets, but kept his record above .500 as he rallied at No. 2 singles. The Patriot senior gave up just one game in the final two sets as he defeated Gary McNeary 4-6, 6-1, 6-0.

Phil Powell defeated Cody Norvell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Chase Wellman picked up the No. 3 singles win when Nick Albertson retired down 6-1, 4-0 in the second set.

Jared Valentine and Adam Horn knocked off Skyler Furney and Kevin Robey 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. In the No. 2 doubles match, Sam Miller and Tylor Smith fell 6-4, 6-1 to Jared Green and Ryan Band.

JCHS split the four junior varsity matches with Seth Ainsworth beating Riley Shroyer 8-1 at No. 2 singles. Matt Shrack won at No. 3 singles, 8-5 over Jacob Drummer.

Fort freshmen fall

VERSAILLES, Ohio - The Fort Recovery High School freshman volleyball team came up with another three-game victory Tuesday to stay perfect on the season. The Indians improved to 4-0 by defeating the Versailles Tigers 25-19, 17-25, 25-17.

Kylie Kahlig tallied team highs of 12 points and three kills for Versailles. Olivia Schwieterman had 18 assists, and Kayla Kahlig followed with 16.

Kara Faller had three blocks and two kills, Hunter McAbee scored seven points and Abby Backs and Rashell Muhlenkamp added three digs apiece.

Jay gridders split

HARTFORD CITY - The Jay County junior varsity football team defeated the host Blackford Bruins 14-12 Tuesday while the freshmen lost 21-0.

Zach Cash powered the Patriot JV victory with a pair of rushing touchdowns. He also ran in the two-point conversion, which provided the winning margin.

Anthony Skeens had an interception, and Jacob Coffman recovered a fumble.

Colton Chapman had six receptions in the loss for the freshmen. Spencer Hodge recorded a pair of sacks.

Tribe eighth wins

FORT RECOVERY - The Fort Recovery Middle School volleyball teams hosted Minster Tuesday with the eighth graders winning 25-20, 25-18 while the seventh grade squad fell 25-5, 25-14.

Janelle Schwieterman led the eighth grade Indians (3-1) with eight points and five assists. Chelsea Pottkotter added five points and four kills.

Kelsey Fiely and Heather Vaughn each matched Pottkotter with five points, and Amy Link had three kills.

Jackie Fullenkamp and Ashley Homan each scored two points as the seventh graders slipped to 0-4. Morgan Dues had two assists.[[In-content Ad]]
