Jay netters sweep SAHS

BERNE — With their first back-to-back wins of the season, the Patriots have pulled even at .500.
Jay County High School’s girls tennis team followed up Saturday’s sweep of Muncie Southside with a second straight shutout victory Monday over the host South Adams Starfires.
Jessica Ooten continued her strong season for the Patriots (4-4), improving to 7-1 as she blanked Shiana Scott at No. 2 singles. Alyssa Rigby cruised past Holly Taylor 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles match, and Melinda Penrod rallied from a first-set defeat at No. 3 singles to top Madison Kloepper 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.
The No. 1 doubles duo of Alicia Degler and Kyla McKibben beat Faith VonGunten and Megan Hreha 6-3, 6-1. Mackenzie McIntire and Brittany Stevens fought off Paris Mohler and Alyssa Armenta in the first set and then cruised through the second in a 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 win.
JCHS won the junior varsity match 9-0 with shutout wins from Avery Loyd and the teams of Shawna Miller and Jill Dirksen, and Emily Westgerdes and Faith Parr.
Golfers take split
WINCHESTER — Jay County settled for a split Monday in a three-team match at Winchester Golf Club.
The Patriots posted a 187 to finish behind the host Golden Falcons (175) and in front of the Monroe Central Golden Bears (189).
Evan Mathias set the pace for JCHS (2-3) again, recording three pars and a birdie on the 388-yard, par-4 fifth hole en route to a 44 on the Beeson nine at WGC.
Brandon Edwards of Winchester earned medalist honors with a 42. Chase Bly shot 45 for the low score for Monroe Central.
Justen Keller had two birdies and a par in his round of 45, and Adam Alfont finished with three pars en route to a 47. Mitchel Rigby and Dylan Friddle posted matching scores of 51.
Baseball slips in 7th
MONROE — The Patriots never trailed until the game was over, giving up three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as the host Adams Central Flying Jets walked off with a 4-3 victory.
Jay County (7-4-1) took the lead with a run in the second inning and scored twice in the sixth to extend the advantage. The Flying Jets picked up a run in the bottom of the sixth and then scored three times to win the game in their final at bat.
Andy Haffner took the loss, giving up four runs — three earned — on nine hits and two walks in six-plus innings. He struck out seven batters.
Dustin Selvey tossed one-third inning of relief, but was unable to stave off the Adams Central Comeback.
Jason Houston had a hit and two runs in the loss, and Chance Fuller scored once. Devin Conatser doubled and drove in a run.
The Jay County junior varsity team lost 13-7 at home to Delta with Zach Pryor taking the defeat. Nick Clemens notched a double, a triple and two runs.
