Jay netters top Starfires

BERNE - With a 3-2 victory over host South Adams, the Jay County High School girls tennis has more wins than it has picked up in each of the last two seasons. The Starfires are still looking for their first victory of 2010.

Alyssa Rigby led the Patriots (6-3), who were 5-10 a year ago, as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Aine O'Donnell at No. 3 singles. Kayla Martin earned the other singles victory for JCHS, winning nine straight games during her 6-2, 6-2 victory over Alex Fox in their No. 1 singles match.

Jay County's No. 1 doubles duo of Becky Muhlenkamp and Emily Huntsman won the first five games against Amber Neuenschwander and Sara Muselman on the way to a 6-1, 6-3 triumph.

Tori Kistler earned the only singles win for South Adams (0-6) as she topped Mariah Clark 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match. At No. 2 doubles the Starfire duo of Kassy Potts and Lindsey Graber beat Ashley Caupp and Danielle Chenoweth 6-3, 6-3.

Jay County won the junior varsity match 8-1 with the No. 1 doubles team of Chelsea Kimmel and Jessica Ooten turning in an 8-0 victory.

Indians honored

FORT RECOVERY - Several Fort Recovery students were honored Monday at the school's academic banquet.

Chelsey Leuthold and Cody Fiely each received the OHSAA Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award, and Nicole Pottkotter and Shane Stein were recognized as OHSAA scholar athletes.

The Archie Griffin award goes to "students who have been outstanding in their efforts to promote sportsmanship, and display ethics, and integrity as a student athlete in their school and community."

Scholar athlete awards are presented to the athlete who has the highest scholastic average in their class and has earned a minimum of four varsity letters. Pottkotter finished her career with six varsity letters and a 4.0 GPA, and Stein earned five varsity letters and a 3.88 GPA.

JC golf loses two

PARKER CITY - The Patriots slipped below .500 Monday, finishing with a score of 203 at Hickory Hills Golf Course.

The host Monroe Central Golden Bears won the three-team match with a 171, and the Winchester Golden Falcons shot 182.

Drew Houck had the best score for Jay County as he turned in his lone par on the 355-yard, par-4 sixth hole. He added six bogies to shoot 46.

Phil Hershey and Cameron Cox of Monroe Central earned medalist honors with matching 40s, and Chuckie Loe had the top score for Winchester with a 41.

Austin Mann followed Houck for the Patriots with a 49, and Seth Ainsworth parred the 272-yard, par-4 fourth hole en route to a 52. Evan Ryder completed the team score with a 56, and Mitchel Rigby posted a 57.

WJMS track rolls

DUNKIRK - West Jay Middle School's track teams each picked up a pair of wins Monday with the girls scoring 70 points in a three-team meet with visiting Southern Wells (53) and Montpelier.

The Eagle boys finished with 55 points while Southern Wells finished second with 46 and Montpelier had 26.

Ciera Barcus and Miranda Gerber each won two events for the WJMS girls (5-0), with Barcus taking the high jump at 4 feet, 8 inches and the long jump at 14 feet, 3 inches. Gerber placed first in the 100-meter dash in 13.5 seconds and the 200 dash in 30 seconds flat.

Tyrah Westlake took the shot put with a toss of 23 feet, 10 inches.

Three of the four victories for the Eagle boys came in the field events, with Andrew Eley taking the top spot in the shot put. James Williams won the long jump, and Daniel Miller was first in the high jump.

Nate Brackman added a win in the 400 dash.

SAMS track falls

BERNE - The South Adams Middle School track team struggled Monday against the Adams Central Flying Jets, losing the boys meet 77-32 and the girls 87-22.

Kyle Cox took first place for the boys team with winning times of 19.37 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles and 33.0 in the 200 hurdles. Brody Shane was first in the 800 run in 2 minutes, 24 seconds and the 1,600 run, and Matt Nussbaum won the long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 10 inches.

The SAMS girls team finished the meet without picking up a win. Alaina Johnston was the runner-up in the 400 dash by two seconds in 1:09.[[In-content Ad]]
