Jay pair to play at Ancilla (06/03/04)

Two more Jay County athletes will extend their athletic careers after signing recently to play in college. Seniors Heath Williams and Dustin Overton are both headed to Ancilla College.

Williams will join 2003 graduate Josh Jellison and follow 2002 graduates Mitch Waters, Kyle Champ and Devon Phillps on the Charger baseball team. Overton will be the first Jay County graduate to play for the Ancilla men’s basketball team.

Golf lessons

Wabash Valley Golf Club pro Rod Ashman will hold a pair of programs this month.

There will be a two-day adult golf clinic Thursday, June 17 and Thursday, June 24. Both sessions will begin at 5:30 p.m.

The cost is $25, and the deadline to register is Thursday, June 10.

The junior program for anyone ages nine through 17 will be a four-day event held on Tuesdays beginning June 15. It will run from 9 to 10:30 a.m., and the cost is $40.

Ashman will be the instructor for the adult program, and he will be joined by South Adams boys and girls golf coaches Mike Wynn and Kristen Sprunger for the junior program.

Flag football tourney

Jay County High School will hold its inaugural 4-on-4 Flag Football Tournament Saturday, June 19.

There will be four divisions, one each for seventh and eighth graders, freshman and sophomores, juniors and seniors and anyone out of high school. The team entry fee is $100, and the deadline to enter is Friday.

Each participant will recieve a T-shirt, and there will be awards for the top three teams in each division.

Monroe Lions 5K

The Monroe Lions Club will sponsor a 5K run/walk on Saturday at 8:15 a.m.

The race will begin at the Adams County 4-H Fairgrounds in Monroe and follow a flat blacktop course. The registration fee is $18.

There will be 12 different age divisions for boys, girls, men and women. Plaques will be awarded to first-place runners in each division with ribbons going to those finishing second through fifth.

Big weekend planned

The Randolph County YMCA in Winchester is planning several events for the city’s 2004 Weekend in the Park Saturday and Sunday, June 12 and 13.

The YMCA will host a 5K run and walk, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, a sand volleyball tournament and a tennis tournament on the weekend.

The 5K will be Saturday, with the race beginning at Winchester High School. The cost is $10, and those who register prior to Monday are guaranteed a T-shirt.

The basketball tournament, with divisions for fifth graders through adults, will be Saturday at the Winchester High School gym. The entry fee is $60 per team, and the registration deadline is Saturday.

The volleyball tournament, a 4-on-4 tourney, will begin Saturday in Goodrich Park and continue Sunday if necessary. The entry fee is $60 and includes a T-shirt, and the entry deadline is Monday.

The tennis tournament will also begin Saturday at Goodrich Park and continue Sunday if necessary. The cost, which includes a T-shirt, is $15.

There will be awards for the top finishers in each division for all four events.

Mayor’s golf outing

The inaugural Mayor’s Charity Golf Outing will be held Friday, July 26 at Portland Country Club.

The entry fee is $200 per team, and the deadline to register is Wednesday, June 16. Only the first 30 teams will be entered.
