The Knights showed stretches of offensive prowess. But when it counted, the Patriots took away all their weapons.
Jay County High School's girls basketball team limited the Norwell Knights to four fourth-quarter points, rallying from a nine-point deficit for a 55-44 victory Friday night.
The Patriots (4-1), who also held Norwell to four points in the second quarter, trailed 40-31 after the third quarter. But the defense locked down and free throws pushed JCHS to the 20-point swing in the final eight minutes.
Jay County made 17 free throws for the game, including 14-of-20 in the fourth quarter. Abby Loy led the effort by making 5-of-6 in the final eight minutes, Lindsey Wellman hit 3-of-4, and Kaelee Keller and Pazia Speed each hit both of their attempts.
Keller also had three first-half 3-pointers on the way to her game-high total of 14 points, and Wellman scored eight of her 12 in the fourth quarter. Loy finished with 11 points, and Cassandra Huelskamp hit her second 3-pointer in the fourth quarter as she finished with 10 to go along with team-bests of seven rebounds and three assists.
Norwell (3-1) lacked consistency on the offensive end as it suffered its first defeat. After opening with a 21-point first quarter for a double-digit advantage, it followed with period totals of four, 15 and four points.
Haley Chaney paced the Knights with 11 points, but missed a pair of fourth-quarter free throws. Kylie Dial added nine points, and Andrea Vogel scored eight.
Junior varsity
The Patriots managed just two points in the second quarter as they fell behind and took a 37-31 loss against Norwell.
Cara Garringer tried to rally Jay County as she scored 10 of her 12 points in the fourth quarter. She hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final period.
Mackenzie Loy added six points and six rebounds, and Erin Hunt hit a pair of 3-pointers for six points.
Caitlyn McGrew powered the Knights with 15 points, all 3-pointers. Kyra Raines added eight points.
Freshman
