Muncie Southside may very well have its best team in recent memory. But even that wasn't enough to stay close to the Patriots.

With its highest point total in five seasons, the Jay County High School girls basketball team clobbered the visiting Rebels 86-42 Friday night.

Southside played a strong first quarter, even leading 13-11 midway through the period. But JCHS (2-0) scored the final two buckets of the opening quarter to take a six-point lead, and pulled away with a 16-0 run in the second.

From the mid-point of the second period to the mid-point of the fourth the Patriots outscored Southside 50-15.

"I think (early) we took them lightly," said JCHS coach Kirk Comer. "I don't think we came out and played with the intensity we played with at (Class 4A No. 7 Fort Wayne) South Side. We weren't mentally ready to play. I was disappointed in that.

"But I thought in the second half we played with more intensity and did the things we need to do to be succesful."

A 47-point second half, keyed by runs of nine and 15 points by Jay County, gave the team its highest scoring output in five years. The Patriots, who broke the 80-point barrier twice last season, defeated Daleville 86-15 during the 2002-03 season.

JCHS focused on execution on the offensive end, racking up 26 assists in the victory. That led to a 53-percent shooting effort with four players in double figures, including junior Lindsey Wellman with a game-high 26.

Senior Kaelee Keller (10 points) led the passing effort with eight assists. Brittany Mann, also a senior, had six assists, Pazia Speed (14 points) and Wellman each added three and Gina Muhlenkamp and Cara Garringer notched two apiece.

"We had an assist for most of the field goals," said Comer, whose team committed just 13 turnovers compared to 27 for the Rebels. "That's pretty impressive."

The big lead allowed Comer to give his players more minutes off the bench.

Danielle Link, a sophomore, responded by hitting all five of her field-goal attempts for 10 points while adding three rebounds.

Sophomore Erin Hunt buried a pair of 3-pointers for her six points, and freshman Maria Murphy was 2-of-2 from the field and 2-of-2 from the line for six points in her first varsity action.

"We're trying to develop depth," said Comer. "I thought Erin Hunt came in and played really well again. Danielle Link ... really had a good fourth quarter rebounding the ball and putting it back in."

Southside (0-1) shot the ball well early, posting a 60-percent mark in the first quarter. But it also turned the ball over eight times in the first eight minutes and could not keep up with the Patriots over the long haul.

Johniscia McCoy shot 6-of-9 from the field and made all of her four free-throw attempts to lead the Rebels with 16 points.

She also grabbed five rebounds.

Cortney Smith added 10 points, six boards and three assists, and Jonaya Taylor added five rebounds and three assists.

"I think coach (Anthony) Jones is doing an outstanding job," said Comer of the Rebels' first-year leader. "Fundamentally they're a lot better. And they shot the ball well in the first half."

Jay County won the rebounding battle 34-27 overall thanks to a 21-11 advantage in the second half.

Wellman grabbed seven rebounds, and Muhlenkamp followed with five.

Comer said he felt his team's work on the glass was the biggest difference when they pulled away from Southside, and he added it will be key against Bellmont and Winchester next weekend.

"We've got to rebound the ball," he said. "Everything starts with the rebound. In my opinion it's the most important stat out there. ... I thought the first half we had one person going to the boards, maybe two if we were lucky, and we've got to have four. We've got to rebound the ball better next week."

Jay County allowed just two points in each of the first three quarters of a 51-11 victory over the Rebels.

Danielle Link led the Patriots with 12 points. Katie Butcher and Mariah Hornaday each scored nine points, and Danielle Wellman had seven.

After leading by six after the first quarter, Jay County took control with a 19-point advantage in the second.

Cassie Mann scored a team-high seven points for Southside, and Carlynn Mayse added four.[[In-content Ad]]
