The Patriots aren't quite ready to challenge one of the best teams in the state. But they weren't exactly out of their league either.

Jay County High School's girls golf team fell to the No. 4 Richmond Red Devils Thursday night, but turned in another solid score in the 184-165 loss at Portland Golf Club.

"We definitely had room for improvement, but when you're playing fourth-ranked Richmond, we played pretty well," said JCHS coach Tom Ferguson. "We haven't played here for several weeks ... 184 is a solid score for us by any means, on any night.

"I think our program is turning a corner. I think we're going to be able to play with better teams."

The Patriots are now 4-1 in dual matches. Their lone loss in last season's 11-1, school-record campaign came against Richmond.

Sophomore Cara Garringer played a consistent nine holes to post the best score for Jay County.

She opened with a long drive on the 275-yard, par-4 first hole, leaving herself just about 30 yards to the green. She chipped to the fringe, hit her put to within two feet and pin high and rolled in for her first par of the day.

She added back-to-back pars on the 349-yard, par-4 fifth and the 401-yard, par-5 sixth and also had five bogeys to match her career-best score with a 42.

Richmond's Trisha Witherby, who finished tied for 19th in the 2007 state finals, was the match medalist with a 38.

"When you see four fours on the scorecard and no sevens, eights or nines, she didn't have any big mistakes," said Ferguson of Garringer. "She had several pars. She just really didn't have any big mistakes. She had 18 putts ... When you can two-putt, when your putting doesn't hurt you, that's a tremendous help."

Senior Jennifer Hunt had an outstanding start to her round and went head-to-head with Witherby for the first five holes.

Hunt birdied the first hole at PGC while Witherby opened with a par, and both players parred the 113-yard, par-3 second. Witherby took a one-stroke lead on the third hole, but Hunt pulled even again with a par on the 290-yard, par-4 fourth.

She was just one stroke back after a bogey on No. 5, but Witherby opened the lead on the 401-yard, par-5 sixth with her lone birdie of the day. Despite making an excellent shot out of a greenside bunker, Hunt had to settle for a double bogey.

She bogied the final two holes of her round, finishing five strokes behind Witherby but just two off of her career best with a 43.

Ivy Simons bogied each of the first three holes and added two more bogies for a 49. Rachel Osterholt rounded out the team score with a 50, and Abby Denney had one par en route to a 51.

"Jennifer Hunt with a three-three start, any time you can put threes on your scorecard you're going to turn in a solid score," said Ferguson. "She wasn't real happy with her score, but 43 is a great score for Jennifer ...

"I feel pretty good. The kids are shooting fairly close to their personal best and they're disappointed. So, I think the kids want to improve, and feel like they can shoot better."

Jay County has been consistent in its last three rounds. After shooting a 201 Aug. 18 against Anderson Highland, the Patriots have posted consecutive nine-hole rounds of 184, 182 and 184 on three different courses.

The school record, set last season at Winchester Golf Club, is 176.

Ferguson said in addition to chasing the team records, the Patriots are going to start focusing on the tournament.

"This next part of the season we're really going to talk more about advancing out of sectional, how that's a realistic goal for us this year as a team," said Ferguson, whose team is just three weeks away from the tournament at Timber Ridge Golf Course in Bluffton. "This is probably ... one of the best team efforts that I've ever had. Usually we have an individual that shoots ... a fairly low score to keep our score down. But (this year) it's got to be a team effort."

Junior varsity

Anneliese Jetmore led Jay County to a 231 total. The Red Devils did not have enough golfers to post a team score.

Jetmore sprinkled three bogeys in her round to post the best JV score of 545. Aubrey Mills had the best round for Richmond at 55.

Macey Gerber also had three bogeys as she shot 55. Brittany Stevens turned in the lone JV par on the 119-yard, par-3 eighth hole and also had a bogey for a 59.

Katie Garlinger completed the team score with a 63. Megan Price also shot 63, and Alex Bunch finished with a 64.[[In-content Ad]]
