Forget 2005.
The Jay County volleyball team is erasing that memory.
The Patriots matched their win total from last season - six - by clobbering the Monroe Central Golden Bears Thursday, 25-22, 25-5, 25-17.
"I think the girls are starting to believe and starting to understand," said JCHS coach Fred Medler after his squad improved to 6-7. "I think the girls are happy.
"Now we're ready for our next goal."
Jay County won yet another three-gamer, blasting Monroe Central in the second game and closing the match on a 15-6 run. The Patriots have been beyond three games just once this year - Tuesday's five-game thriller over Liberty Christian (Anderson).
Monroe Central threatened in the third game, taking an 11-10 lead on a kill by Charity Walker. But it was all Patriots from there. Shelby Rines and Ashley Horn served Jay County to an 8-1 run, taking advantage of a host of Golden Bear errors.
The visitors never got closer than four points again, and a Sarah Mescher kill capped the victory.
Senior setter Erica Clark had a big match for Jay County, putting up 25 assists and sharing the team-high of 11 points with Rines and Theresa Reinhart. She also finished 13-of-13 serving with eight points and one ace, and added two kills and one block.
Sarah Westgerdes followed up her 22 kills in five games Tuesday with 15 in Thursday's three-game set. She also had two blocks.
Reinhart had eight kills and six points, Horn scored 16 points and Jessica Murdock had 10 points.
The opening game saw Jay County struggle with the Golden Bears, but the home team finally pulled away to win after a tie at 20.
"It was catching us in between," said Medler of the different style of play. "That slow-paced ball coming at us was throwing us off."
But not in game two.
The Patriots rolled out to a 10-0 lead on Horn's serve with seven of those points coming on kills and blocks by Westgerdes. Murdock followed by serving a 9-0 run for a 20-2 Patriot lead, and Rines finished the speedy game with back-to-back aces.[[In-content Ad]]
