Jay stands up to No. 6 Winchester (01/19/08)
JCHS boys basketball

The Patriots were unfazed but it all.
They shrugged off their opponent's state-finals pedigree.
They ignored its state ranking.
They dismissed its recent gaudy numbers.
And they disregarded a double-digit halftime deficit.
Jay County High School's boys basketball team made big play after big play down the stretch Friday night, and forced five-second call with 6.6 seconds left to upset the Class 2A No. 6 Winchester Golden Falcons 46-44.
"That's a huge win," said Aaron Daniels, who shared the JCHS team high of 10 points with fellow senior Luke Goetz. "Winchester's a very good basketball team and the Koch kid's a heck of a player."
The Golden Falcons' Tyler Koch scored 14 of his game-high 19 points as he starred in the first half, but down the stretch Jay County players took turns in the spotlight.
The Patriots (7-4) had tied the game at 35, only to fall behind by seven again with three minutes to play. Billy Wellman responded with a 3-pointer - he had missed his first four long-distance attempts - off a Kyle Simmons assist.
A Winchester turnover followed, and Kyle Simmons buried a 3-pointer of his own off an assist from Goetz. Before the shot he was 0-for-5 from 3-point range this year. It was his first and only field-goal attempt of the game.
Jay County coach Craig Teagle, whose team has won four straight since blowing a double-digit lead at home against Elwood Dec. 29, said mental toughness has been a key during the stretch.
"You've got to learn to not worry about the play you made," he said. "Because the most important play, in basketball and in life, is the next play."
The ensuing play saw a near-steal from Clint Muhlenkamp turn into a scramble play that seemed to open the door for the Golden Falcons (10-3). Instead, Luke Goetz intercepted a long pass and JCHS eventually called a time-out with 31.6 seconds to go.
With the game on the line, Wellman got the ball on the right wing. He passed to Simmons in the corner, who penetrated and saw Goetz cutting to the basket. A back-door pass led to a lay-up for Goetz and a 45-44 lead with 14 seconds left.
Winchester brought the up the floor and called time-out with 6.6 seconds to go, but upon returning to the court Andrew Haney couldn't find anyone to pass the ball to and was called for a five-second violation.
"The biggest concern for us was getting into that possession in the first place," said Winchester coach Chip Mehaffey. "We just got out-executed down the stretch."
Wellman split a pair of free throws to make it 46-44, and still the Golden Falcons had a chance. Haney took the inbound pass and the JCHS defense parted, giving him a free path to the basket. But just when it looked like the game-tying lay-up was his, Goetz came from behind to knock the ball away and preserve the victory for the home team.
"Luke Goetz showed great leadership on the floor again tonight," said Teagle. "He's just for the last four games took over."
Goetz shot 5-of-7 from the field, including a pull-up jumper to close the third quarter.
Daniels was 2-for-3 on field goals, and also buried six free throws.
After trailing 27-16 at the half, Jay County limited the Golden Falcons to just a Daniel Maggert 3-pointer in the third quarter. It pulled even at 35 on a three-point play by Daniels three minutes into the final period before falling behind again and then rallying for the win.
"They always play great defense," said Mehaffey, whose team shot just 1-of-6 in the third quarter. "They're the finest-coached team we play year in and year out."
It was a 93-point turn-around for the 2007 state runners-up, who slaughtered Hagerstown 124-32 in their last outing Jan. 11.

Jay County fought off the Falcons, holding on for a 35-32 win.
The Patriots (7-4) held a slim lead for much of the second half, but it was shaved to just 30-29 on free throw by Kyle Deboy with 1:08 remaining. However, Eric Homan responded with a pair of free throws followed by a steal and lay-up to keep JCHS in control.
Neal Beshears hit a 3-pointer for Winchester with 36 seconds left, but the Patriots held on as another of his long ball tries missed on the final possession.
Homan led the Patriots to the victory with 14 points. Jacob Westlake and Taylor Farmer each added six points.
Beshears had 10 points for the Golden Falcons, who suffered their first loss of the season. Deboy followed with seven.
