Jay student visits D.C. (6/30/05)

Josh Atkinson, a Jay County High School student, attended the Presidential Classroom’s Law & Justice in a Democracy program on June 11 through June 18 in Washington, D.C.
As part of the program, Atkinson got to interact with Members of Congress, observe the U.S. Congress in action and visit their offices. He attended a seminar on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, a Supreme Court briefing, student moot court and visited area law firms. They also visited the White House, the U.S. Department of State and Arlington National Cemetery.
Reading challenge
Fort Recovery Elementary School students are invited to join the Ohio Reads Governor’s Reading Challenge this summer. Forms may be picked up at the Fort Recovery Public Library and returned when students read 20 books or a 20 hour reading challenge or bring the forms to school in August.
Each student who completes the program will receive a certificate from the governor and a prize from the school. Also, all names will go into a drawing for special prizes.
Free clothes
Morgan’s Closet, located at 417 N. Ship St. in Portland is offering free clothing to those in need. The shop is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.
Ball State grads
The following area students graduated from Ball State University during the 2005 spring semester.
Michael Shackelford, Dunkirk, earned an associate’s in science degree.
Nathaniel Wade, Portland, earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture.
Earning bachelor of arts degrees were Nicole Byron, Dunkirk; Andrew Garringer, Portland; and Jamie Dragoo, Redkey.
Trisha Evans and Ambrosia Revolt, both of Dunkirk, earned bachelor’s degrees in general studies.
Earning bachelor of science degrees were Carrie Fifer (summa cum laude), Bryant; Kelli Clanin (cum laude) and Mischa Staton (cum laude), Dunkirk; and Breanne Gillespie, Cindy Grile, Beth Muhlenkamp and Nathaniel Wade, all of Portland.
Bethany McCowan Johnson, Redkey, earned a master of arts in education.
Frank Ingram, Ridgeville, earned a bachelor of arts degree.
Earning bachelor of science degrees were Jessie Goodhew, Autumn Harris, Samantha Sheller (magna cum laude) and Ryan Taylor, all of Ridgeville.
