Time was frozen for a moment. It still wasn’t quite enough for the Knights.

The Jay County girls basketball team survived a late charge and an odd ending to beat the Norwell Knights 50-47 Friday night.

“I’m really pleased to get out of here with a win tonight,” said JCHS coach Kirk Comer, whose team won its third straight to improve to 4-2. “That’s a very good basketball team. They’re defending sectional champs. They have a lot of weapons and it’s a huge win for us. ... Hopefully we can just keep the momentum going Tuesday night.”

The Patriots, who will host Bluffton Tuesday, were up by 10 points with just 2:08 to play, but had trouble taking care of the ball down the stretch. Several turnovers allowed Norwell to go on a 9-2 run, with Taylor Plummer pulling the Knights to within 50-47 with just 3.7 seconds remaining.

After a timeout, Jay County’s inbound pass was stolen near mid court and Norwell made one pass in search of a game-tying 3-pointer. However, the clock had never started and the play was whistled dead.

The officials conversed and put 0.7 seconds on the clock, giving the Knights a final opportunity. However, freshman Kylie Dials’ pass on the ensuing play bounced off Alle Donaghy to finish the contest.

“We looked at one thing instead of three, and that’s hard to do, especially for a freshman,” said Norwell coach Eric Thornton.

He said his team’s final play had three options — Mackenzie Warwick rolling off a screen away from the ball at the top of the key, Taylor Plummer popping toward the ball after setting the screen and Donaghy coming off a baseline screen. He said Plummer was open on the play, but his team failed to get her the ball.

“It’s certainly not (Dials’) fault,” Thornton added. “It’s hard to get a clean look with 0.7, but that’s what we were trying to do.”

The teams battled closely for the first quarter-and-a-half, until Jay County opened a 28-20 lead at the intermission. The Knights pulled to within four in the third quarter, only to have the Patriots score the next six points in a row with five of those coming from Theresa Reinhart.

Jay County’s lead hovered near eight points the rest of the way, pushing to 10 on a pair of Reinhart foul shots with 2:08 to go before Norwell made its run at the end.

Sara Garringer led another balanced scored effort for the Patriots with 12 points. She also had a game-high four assists.

Markie Runyon had eight points, eight rebounds and four blocks, and Theresa Reinhart added eight points and four rebounds. Dana Horn had seven points and three assists, and Chelsea DeBoy scored all of her six points in the first half.

Horn (2-for-2) and Garringer (2-for-3) led a much-improved shooting effort from long distance. Jay County finished 6-of-14 (43 percent) from 3-point range after hitting just 4-of-25 (16 percent) in Tuesday’s win over Mississinewa.

“We were trying to go inside a little more,” said Comer. “I thought our shot selection was a lot better tonight ...

“Again after the game we told the girls it was another great team effort. Several girls contributed tonight. I think that’s something you’re going to see throughout the season.”

Jay County also had just seven first-half turnovers before struggling late in the game and finishing with 19.

The Patriot defense was solid, holding Warwick to 13 points on 2-of-10 shooting from the field. She hit on just one of her five 3-point attempts.

Dial finished with 11 points, and Donaghy hit each of her three 3-point attempts and scored 10 points.

Thornton said he was happy with the way his team played late in the game, but wished it could have happened earlier.

“The frustrating thing was we would get back in it in the third quarter then we would let them go right back up to the same lead,” he said. “We just spun our wheels a lot there in the second half.”

The loss dropped the Knights to 1-4 on the season, but their losses have come against outstanding competition. They have fallen to teams — Heritage, Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger, Fort Wayne Concordia and Jay County — with a combined record of 14-3.

Junior varsity

Jay County managed just three points in the first and third quarters in falling 40-26 to the Knights.

The Patriots were down by nine at the half and trailed 22-15 early in the third period. From there Norwell went on a 10-0 run to put the game away.

Alyssa Shutt was the top scorer for the Knights with 13 points. Haley Chaney had nine points, and Mandy Hinton scored six.

Kaelee Keller was the lone Patriot in double figures with 11 points. Brittany Mann added seven points.

Freshman

Kaylee Imel came up big for Norwell, giving the visiting Knights a 27-24 victory over Jay County.

The Patriots trailed for much of the game, but rallied by outscoring Norwell 11-6 in the third period. They were tied at 24 late, but Imel buried a 3-pointer to give her team the win.

Imel finished with a game-high nine points. Natalie Meyer followed with six points.

Mackenzie Loy scored seven points to lead Jay County. Ashley Waters had six points, and Kristi Morningstar added four.[[In-content Ad]]
