FORT WAYNE — Jay County posted personal-best times in more than half of its swims Saturday as the boys tankers finished seventh at the 11-team Homestead sectional.
The Patriots scored 93 points for their finish. South Adams was fifth with 156 points.
The host Spartans, ranked fifth in the state, dominated the meet with 459 points, nearly 300 ahead of second-place Oak Hill. They won every event, taking the top three positions in six out of eight individual events.
Jay County got its best finish from the 200-yard freestyle relay team, which placed fifth. Joseph Vormohr, Josh Hawn, Matthew Peterson and Derick Lee teamed for a time of 1-minute, 38.99 seconds.
Derick Lee, who had personal-best times in all four of his swims, notched the best individual finish for the Patriots. He was sixth in the 100 butterfly in a career-best 58.77 seconds.
The senior added an eighth-place finish in the 200 freestyle in 1:56.45.
Matthew Peterson, also a senior, was the only other Jay County swimmer to compete in a pair of individual events. He was 12th in both the 50 and 100 freestyle in 24.75 and 54.78 respectively.
Junior Joseph Vormohr was eighth in the 100 breaststroke in a personal-best time of 1:10.16, and freshman Tom McCord took eighth in the 100 backstroke in 1:04.29.
The other two Patriot relays finished sixth and seventh respectively. Vormohr, Hawn, Tom McCord and Matt Eldridge posted a time of 1:56.23 for sixth in the 200 medley relay, and Lee, Peterson, Eldridge and Scott Walker finished the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:46.86 for seventh place.
The best finish for South Adams also came from a relay. Shane Swygart, Carson Sprunger, Andy Lehman and Brent Hirschy teamed to take third place in the 200 medley relay in 1:51.05, an improvement of nearly three seconds over their preliminary time.
Freshman Matt Kruse was the lead individual for the Starfires, finishing fifth in a pair of events. He was just ahead of Lee in the 100 butterfly in 57.79, and finished the 200 freestyle in 1:52.52.
Sprunger also finished in fifth place in his championship race, posting a time of 1:09.03 in the 100 backstroke.
Kruse, Sprunger, John Gresla and Heath Lehman teamed for fourth in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:38.99, and Kruse, Gresla, Hirschy and Heath Lehman were fifth in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:35.67.
Gresla was ninth in the 500 freestyle in 5:31.33, and 11th in the 200 individual medley in 2:18.58. Heath Lehman finished 10th in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.62, and was also 11th in the 50 freestyle in 24.41.
Swygart finished ninth in the 100 backstroke in 1:04.66, and Drew Dull was 12th in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:21.73.[[In-content Ad]]
