JCHS swimming

The Patriot boys won 10 of 12 events. The girls' depth carried them to victory.

Jay County High School's swim teams each scored decisive wins Thursday over sectional rival Bellmont, 186-108 in the boys competition and 181-128 in the girls.

Neal Fennig led a balanced effort for the Patriot boys as his team's lone double winner. He won the 100-yard butterfly in 1-minute, 4.47 seconds and the 100 backstroke at 1:05.49.

Fennig also teamed with Sam Miller, Aaron Hudson and Chance Milligan to win the 200 medley relay in 1:48.77.

Mary Hudson and Cori Vormohr each won a pair of events for the girls team, which won just five events but dominated its victories.

Hudson paced a top-three sweep in the 100 backstroke, winning in 1:15.8 ahead of teammates Katie Simmons and Lauren Murrell. She combined with Michelle Landfair for a one-two finish in the 100 butterfly in 1:05.87.

Both of Vormohr's wins led one-two Patriot efforts. The first came with Landfair in the 200 freestyle in 2:05.91, and the second was with Briann Saxman in the 500 freestyle in 5:44.63.

Hudson, Landfair, Christa Castillo and Michaela Long took the 200 freestyle relay in 1:54.69.

Sam Miller's individual win came with a time of 2:04.01 in the 200 individual medley, and he also was part of all three relay wins. Along with the medley, he joined Hudson, Milligan and Derik Lucas for first in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:37.23 and Nathan Cain, Wiley Young and Richard Osterholt to take the 400 freestyle relay in 3:49.62.

Hudson dominated the 500 freestyle by about 25 seconds in 5:28.73, and Cain won the 200 freestyle by one second at 2:04.14. Lance VanSkyock took the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.95 with teammate Jared Valentine second, and the team of Hudson, Milligan, Fennig and Caleb Hummel placed second in the 400 freestyle relay.

Megan Taylor got the Patriot girls started on the right foot with another diving win with 190.75 points. April Acker (172.9) followed in second place.

Steven Kelly and Donny McCowan went uncontested in boys diving with scores of 215.15 and 176.6 respectively.[[In-content Ad]]
