HARTFORD CITY - Saturday afternoon the UCLA Bruins scored a stunning upset over second-ranked USC, denying them a berth in the BCS championship game. But the Blackford Bruins had no such luck against their own highly-ranked foe later that night.

The No. 9 Patriots erased any hope of an upset by the home team upset in the opening quarter, holding the Bruins without a field goal as they opened a 19-2 lead. They kept at least a double-digit advantage the rest of the way as their 57-39 win capped a Jay County comeback in the third annual Cross County Lines Challenge.

The challenge pits seven teams from Jay County against seven from Blackford County with the winner taking the trophy honoring former players Billy Bentz and Ed Holdcroft. Jay County went 1-3 in the junior high games, but won the freshman, junior varsity and varsity contests to take the trophy for the third straight year.

After jumping out to a 9-0 lead in the first two minutes against Bellmont Friday, the Patriots gave the same treatment to Blackford. They were up 9-0 when the Bruins called their first time-out midway through the opening quarter, and pushed to 14-0.

Micah Seidner finally broke the scoreless drought with two free throws at the 3:02 mark, but Jay County scored the final five points of the quarter for a 17-point lead. Blackford went 0-for-6 from the field with eight turnovers in the first quarter while the Patriots opened by hitting five straight field goals.

"Any time you're playing a hole like that against anybody it's not good, but especially a good team like Jay County," said BHS coach John McGlothin. "They can become deliberate with their offense ... and it's hard to take them out of what they do."

The win was the seventh straight for Jay County over Blackford, the last loss coming in the 2002 sectional. The Patriots are 17-1 overall at Blackford since then, having won three sectional titles and the 2006 regional in Hartford City. During the same stretch, the Bruins have won just nine games on their own home floor.

After building the big lead, Jay County (3-0) slowed the game down.

"We bounced up 19-2 and we took the full-court pressure off because we were getting so much in (transition) we weren't running any offense," said Patriot coach Craig Teagle after watching his team cause 25 turnovers. "That's good in a way, but we're going to play some people that aren't going to let us (run).

"We did a really good job (defensively). Our kids are just really moving their feet and they're active. And we're not very big, so we've got to work awfully hard on that end."

With the pressure off, the Bruins pulled to within 11 points at halftime. Jay County committed six turnovers in the second quarter.

"We've got to clean stuff up," added Teagle, whose team is 3-0 for the second straight season. "That was good for us that they made that little run and made us play a little bit of half court."

The Patriots put the game away as they opened the second half with a 15-5 run. They had their best shooting game thus far, hitting 51 percent from the field.

Sophomore Billy Wellman led a balanced scoring attack with 11 points.

Luke Goetz had nine points, Rhett Retter and Scott "Scooter" Bruggeman scored eight apiece and Corey Comer and Clint Muhlenkamp each added six.

Muhlenkamp had four rebounds and Bruggeman dished out four assists.

Teagle said their wasn't any one player who stood out in the solid team win.

"At times they all impress me ... I really love the group of kids we've got," he said. "They're just hard-nosed. Physically they're pretty tough. Mentally we're not where we need to be yet. We need to be more poised sometimes. But, I'm telling you, they listen and they want to get better and they liked to be coached. And I'll take a coach-able kid any day of the week."

Tyler Schache was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and 2-of-2 from the line off the bench for 10 points to lead Blackford. Marcus Dalton added seven points and Donnie Strine had four rebounds.

"I felt like we had the right game plan ... we just weren't as tough as we needed to be in the first quarter," said McGlothin. "That's where we've got to get better. We've got to come out ready to play four quarters."

Junior varsity

Jay County dominated the second quarter in a 37-26 victory over the Bruins.

The Patriots (3-0) trailed 5-2 early, but pushed ahead on back-to-back 3-pointers from Kyle Simmons. They outscored Blackford 16-3 in the second quarter and never trailed again.

Dexter Shreve scored all of his team-high nine points in the second half, and Simmons had all of his eight points in the first half. Blake Price added six points.

Donnie Strine scored 10 points to lead the Bruins, and Jared Coons added five.

Junior high

East Jay's seventh graders scored the only junior high win for Jay County in the cross county challenge, defeating Hartford City 50-23. The Chief eighth graders lost 34-29.

Andy Haffner powered the seventh grade team (1-2) to its first win with 17 points. Jordan McBride added eight points.

Garrett Krieg and Kyle Cline each scored six points as the EJMS eighth graders fell to 1-2. Brandon Kaufman added five points.

Statistics from the freshman and West Jay games were not available at press time.[[In-content Ad]]
