In track dual meets, a lot of races can be lopsided. But Thursday night brought five exciting finishes and several other excellent races.

Fort Recovery’s girls took their share of victories, but Jay County had enough depth to score a 66-57 victory. The Patriot boys had four uncontested sweeps and won all but three events against the small Tribe boys team in a 90-33 win.

“I was surprised how it worked out,” said FRHS coach Jason Grieshop. “You never know when you’re going against one team if the competition is going to be there. Everything from 400 on up was a dogfight. Everyone had their hands full with who they were running against. It was really good competition for only two schools.”

Jay County senior Justin Gilbert and Fort Recovery foreign exchange student Phil Gantenbein battled in two of the tight finishes.

The pair squared off first in the 400-meter dash. Gantenbein, who is from Switzerland, opened a lead of about 10 meters on the back stretch, but Gilbert’s sprinting ability came through. He charged in the final 100 meters to beat Gantenbein by one second even in 53.17 seconds.

The duo met up again on the final leg of the 4x400 relay.

The first three runners — Doug Murray, Alex Michael and Micah Enyart for Jay County, and Mitch Fullenkamp, Matt Vagedes and Eric Lamm for Fort Recovery — traded the lead several times, with Enyart edging past Lamm as they handed off to the anchor runners. Gantenbein surged ahead and took an even bigger lead on the back stretch before Gilbert came surging back again for a Patriot victory in 3-minutes, 41.02 seconds.

“We have a 4x400 team,” said JCHS boys coach Greg Garringer, who used Gilbert in both 400s and Michael in the relay for the first time this season. “We found that out the last meet at South Adams ... so far the experiment is paying off for us.”

The girls version of the 400 dash was also close with the Patriots’ Amanda Johnson battling the Indians’ Tiff Gaerke. Gaerke trailed on the back stretch before rallying in the final 100, but Johnson was able to hold on for a one-second victory in 1:02.9.

The girls 100 hurdles races between Vicki Roessner of Fort Recovery and Jay County’s Erika Hunt was a dead heat at the final hurdle. Roessner won the race to the finish line for a time of 18 seconds flat, just 27 hundredths ahead of Hunt.

Fullenkamp and the Patriots’ Chris Moore swapped the advantage a couple of times in the 1,600 run, with Moore leading at the mid-point before Fullenkamp went back ahead with one lap to go. He opened the lead on the back stretch and Moore couldn’t quite chase him down, finishing less than four tenths off the pace of 5:05.33.

Adam Steinbrunner of the Tribe and JCHS freshman Brady Mills fought it out in the 3,200 run with Steinbrunner holding a slim advantage throughout the first 3,100 meters. But Mills rallied and pulled in front in the final 10 meters, winning the longest race of the night by just four tenths of a second in 11:31.55.

The girls 4x800 race wasn’t as close as some of the others, but the two teams brought out the best in each other.

Gaerke took out a fast pace and stayed ahead of Alyssa Johnson on the first leg and Fort Recovery never gave up the lead. Vicki Roessner, Tina Roessner and Mindy Vogel followed as the Indians posted their best time of the season by 13 seconds in 10:09.86.

“That 4x800 relay is starting to look kind of special,” said Grieshop. “We’re not there yet, but we’ve made unbelievable strides these last two weeks with that relay. I think the girls are starting to sense where they can go. We need to get another 10 seconds or 15 seconds off of that, but they’re making great, great strides there.”

Though the Jay County team of Alyssa Johnson, Jessica Mosier, Allison Fullenkamp and Amanda Johnson finished second, it also posted a season-best time. The Patriots were just three seconds off the school record in 10:22.

“We got beat in the 3,200 relay, but I was real please with (the effort),” said Bantz, echoing Grieshop’s thoughts about the quality of the competition. “I have been greatly surprised by Richmond, South Adams ... and Fort Recovery.”

Sarah Mescher won both sprints for Jay County, finishing the 100 dash in 13.42 and the 200 dash in 28.89. She teamed with Nicole Pfeifer, Janel Chittum and Kristi Morningstar for first in the 4x100 relay in 55.86.

Pfeifer won the long jump at 14 feet, two inches, Alyssa Johnson took the 3,200 run in 12:40.50 and Lindsey Current took the high jump at four feet, 10 inches.

Vicki Roessner added a second victory for the Indians in the 300 hurdles with a time of 50.83. Holly Stein also earned a pair of Tribe wins with tosses of 35 feet, six inches in the shot put and 104 feet, 81/4 inches in the discus.

Mindy Vogel was first in the 800 run in 2:31.02, and Tina Roessner took the 1,600 run in 5:51.55.

Vicki Roessner, Tina Roessner, Vogel and Rachel Tobe teamed to take the 4x400 relay in 4:36.05.

“Vicki ran her best 800 of the year then followed it up with her best hurdles race of the year,” said Grieshop of the back-to-back effort. “That was quite a combination to do and she did them both well.

“It was nice to have good weather for a change. The kids ran well. The girls came through and most everybody in their individual races ran personal records today. You can’t ask for anything more out of them.”

In addition to his great 400 races, Gilbert was also first in the 100 dash (11.52) and the 200 dash (23.64).

Mason Shreve won a pair of uncontested hurdle races with times of 16.92 and 46.24 in the 110 and 300 respectively, and Dexter Shreve took both the high jump (six feet) and the long jump (18 feet, seven inches). Michael, Brandon Reynard, Dustin Harris and Ben Wellman took the 4x100 relay in 47.08.

Joseph Vormohr dominated the shot put (49 feet, two inches) and the discus (151 feet, 111/2 inches).

“(Vormohr) is still consistent,” said Garringer of his senior who will have a chance to reach the state meet in both events. “He’s right where we want him to be.”

Eric Lamm scored Fort Recovery’s second individual win as the Indians swept the 800 run. He was first in 2:15.98 with Mitch Fullenkamp second and Jim Roessner third.

Lamm, Mitch Fullenkamp, Gantenbein and Jim Roessner also teamed for first in the 4x800 relay in 8:59.11.

“The guys ran consistent with what they’ve been doing a lot of this year,” said Grieshop. “The (relays) were both right around their best times of the year.”[[In-content Ad]]
