WINCHESTER - A lot of good things happened for the Patriots Saturday night. But perhaps the most important detail to remember - they never trailed.

On the road for the second straight night and against a state-ranked team, the Jay County High School girls basketball team took control from the opening tip and never let go.

Three Patriots scored in double figures as the team shot 18-of-21 from the foul line in a 60-50 victory over the Class 2A No. 7 Winchester Golden Falcons.

"When we played relaxed, we played our style of ball," said JCHS coach Kirk Comer. "Winchester is an outstanding team. I knew it was going to be hard fought. ...

"I think we took a big step tonight."

Jay County scored the opening basket of the game on a Dana Horn 3-pointer, and a Lindsey Wellman free throw put them up 4-2 before a pair of Sarah Hamm foul shots tied the game at four. It marked the last time in the game the Golden Falcons would be even with the Patriots, and it lasted just nine seconds.

Cassandra Huelskamp followed Hamm's free throws with a 3-pointer at the 5:20 mark of the first period, and Jay County kept the lead the rest of the way. It built an 18-8 advantage by the end of the first quarter, and never let the Golden Falcons get closer than 33-30 early in the second half.

From that point the Patriots went on an 11-1 run, and kept it at least a two-possession game the rest of the way.

It was their fourth straight win against Winchester, which also lost to JCHS a year ago during a 19-4 campaign. The game was tied for just 1:11, with the Patriots holding the lead for the remaining 30:49.

"We just played a very good Jay County team," said Winchester coach Gary Horner, whose team suffered its first loss to fall to 2-1. "They lost that heart-breaker to Fort Wayne South Side a couple weeks ago, but that team is very balanced and very strong.

"After a couple of minutes of a little sporadic play in the first quarter we settled down and handled the pressure a lot better and got some good shots. We just didn't get them to fall when they needed to."

Huelskamp, who hit two 3-pointers to give her eight through four games, scored a team-high 14 points for the Patriots while leading their 86-percent effort from the free-throw line. She hit all of her six foul shots, and Pazia Speed was also perfect from the line on her five attempts en route to 11 points.

Kaelee Keller matched Huelskamp with two 3-pointers as she also scored 11 points. She added five rebounds and three assists.

Huelskamp has scored in double figures in each of the Patriots' first four games.

"She's just a senior that's stepping up and doing what we expect her to do," said Comer of Huelskamp. "I'm very happy for her."

Lindsey Wellman, the team's top scorer thus far, had trouble getting good looks as she was giving up 5 inches in the post to 6-foot-3-inch Sarah Hamm. But she found other ways to contribute, grabbing a team-best seven rebounds and sharing the game-high of four assists with Horn.

In addition to her double-figure scoring, Speed was a key on defense as she locked down on Morgan Peacock in the second half. Peacock, a Winchester junior, finished with a game-high 15 points, but was neutralized for much of the final 16 minutes. She hit the 3-pointer to pull the Golden Falcons to within 33-30 1:57 into the second half, but did not score again until there was just 2:07 left in the game.

"She did an outstanding job," said Comer of Speed. "I thought the team did a good job. ... Our defense was really good on the ball. ... Overall we played pretty well defensively."

Steph Geeting followed Peacock with 14 points, nine of which came on 3-pointers, for Winchester.

Hamm had nine rebounds, eight points and two blocks, and Kelsey Tarter also grabbed nine boards.

Jay County outscored the Golden Falcons 18-7 in the second and third quarters as it took a 34-22 victory.

Brittany Muhlenkamp scored eight of the Patriots' 10 third-quarter points as she finished with a game-high 13. Erin Hunt added nine points, and Mackenzie Loy finished with six.

Kristen Rheinhart scored eight points to pace Winchester, and Emily Sells added seven.[[In-content Ad]]
