Jay track dominates

Jay County roundup

HARTFORD CITY — Zane Shreve, Ciera Barcus and Sara Lennartz got off to strong starts Tuesday to lead the Patriots.
Shreve won three individual events and contributed to a first-place relay to lead the Jay County High School boys track team to an 81-point effort as it defeated the Muncie Southside Rebels (36) and host Blackford Bruins (35).
Barcus and Lennartz combined to sweep the field events for the Patriot girls, who scored 100 points and cruised past Blackford (24) and Southside (23).
Shreve posted winning times of 17.2 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles and 42.6 in the 300 hurdles, and also won the high jump at 6 feet even. He teamed with Dylan Cope, Wil Rowles and J.D. Mangas for a first-place time of 3 minutes, 56 seconds, in the 4x400 relay.
Barcus dominated the high jump as she won by a half-foot at 5 feet, 2 inches, and also finished first at 16 feet, 3½ inches, in the long jump. Lennartz recorded winning distances of 105 feet, 2 inches, in the discus and 29 feet, 5½ inches, in the shot put.
Dylan Cope won the 800 and 1,600 runs for the boys team, and Tyler Back was first in the discus and shot put. Adding individual wins for the girls team, which swept the relays, were Katie Snyder (200 dash), Malarie Houck (100 hurdles), Abigail Johnson (3,200 run), Amber Huelskamp (400 dash) and Andrea Bruggeman (300 hurdles).

Baseball loses first
Jay County couldn’t muster much offense on its home field Tuesday as it dropped its first game of the season 5-1 to the visiting Wayne Generals.
Both teams scored once in the opening inning, but the Patriots went on to record just two hits in the game. Wayne added single runs in the second and third innings as well as two in the seventh for the final margin.
Leadoff hitter Kyle Selvey scored the only run for Jay County (0-1). Alex Dunn and Wesley Hibbard finished with one hit apiece.

Selvey took the loss, giving up three runs — two earned — on four hits in three innings of work. Landry Inman gave up two runs on four hits and a walk in four innings of relief.

Bruins top tennis
HARTFORD CITY — The Patriots couldn’t keep pace with the host Blackford Bruins on Tuesday as they dropped their opening match of the year 4-1.
Brooke Fraley earned the lone victory for Jay County as she knocked of Hannah Lex 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Morgan Kaufman won her opening set at No. 2 singles before falling 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 to Elizabeth Mattson, and Avery Loyd suffered a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Rachel Baker at No. 1 singles.
Faith Parr and Emily Westgerdes lost 6-0, 6-4 to Justine Ickes and Hope Miller at No. 1 doubles, and Jessica Kerrigan and Katy Smeltzer fell 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) to Cate Anderson and Jamie Coons at No. 2 doubles.
JCHS won the junior varsity match 4-2 behind a pair of shutouts in doubles action from Kristin Ireland and Courtney Thomas.

JV baseball falls
SELMA — Jay County’s bats came alive, but they couldn’t muster enough offense to recover from a six-run deficit Tuesday as the Patriots lost 10-7 to the host Wapahani Raiders.
Chandler Jacks took the loss for JCHS as he gave up six runs — four earned — on six hits and two walks in four innings. Wapahani scored five times in the second inning to take control.
Austin Beasley paced the Patriot offense as he finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Jacks added two hits and two RBIs, and Brandon Muhlenkamp scored two runs.[[In-content Ad]]
