HARTFORD CITY — Even if Donald Rumsfeld hadn’t chosen to stay on for a second term Jay County wouldn’t have been interested in his services. The Patriots don’t need any help with their defense.

Jay County won Saturday for the second time in three games, silencing the Blackford Bruin attack to come out on top 40-30.

The Patriots (2-1) held the host Bruins to just 20 percent shooting from the field. Their first win, in season opener against Elwood, came as they kept the Panthers to 33 percent.

The victory also capped a Jay County victory in the inaugural cross county line challenge between the school systems. It won 5-2 as the West Jay seventh grade team beat Montpelier, the East Jay eighth grade team topped Hartford City and the freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams all came away victorious.

The Patriots were presented with a trophy in remembrance of Billy Bentz and Ed Holdcroft, former players at Jay County and Blackford respectively. Both men died young, Bentz in a car crash and Holdcroft of cancer.

Defense, rebounding and free-throw shooting highlighted the win for the Patriots as they didn’t shoot much better than Blackford, finishing just 10-of-42 for 24 percent. The teams were even in points scored from the field, but Jay County won thanks to an 18-of-24 effort from the foul line. Blackford made just eight free throws in 13 attempts.

“When you’re on the road the two constants are defense and free throws,” said Jay County coach Craig Teagle. “Those two things pulled us through tonight.”

Mark Kelly, who scored a career-high 25 points in the Patriots’ loss to Class 3A No. 2 Bellmont a night earlier, and Scott “Scooter” Bruggeman led the effort from the line. Kelly was the only player from either team to finish in double figures as he scored 11 points, including a 5-of-6 effort from the free-throw line.

Bruggeman went 7-of-8 from the foul line, including 5-of-6 in the final 1:09, to finish with nine points. Trent Bailey added seven points.

Kelly paced the outstanding rebounding by Jay County as it outworked the Bruins 47-26 on the glass. He grabbed 15 rebounds, which was three times as many as any Blackford player. Bruggeman added six rebounds and Andy Pinkerton had two assists.

Kelly also had two blocks, as did Bailey. Bruggeman and Pinkerton each dished out two assists.

While happy with getting a victory, Teagle said his team needs to find a way to put points on the board more consistently.

“We need to break out,” he said. “We need to find ways to find easy points. We did everything a step slow.

“The kids were disappointed. They didn’t feel like they got a win. And that’s a good thing. They know we can execute better.”

Jay County trailed early in the game, but never lost the lead after pulling ahead 13-12 on a Pinkerton free throw in the second quarter. The foul shot was part of a 9-0 Patriot run to close the first half, which also included 3-pointers by Bailey and Randy Evans for an 18-12 lead.

Blackford (0-3) never got closer than four points in the second half and Jay County scored the final five points of the game, all on Bruggeman free throws.

The high scorer for the Bruins, who missed all of their 10 3-point tries in the first half and finished 2-of-20, was Nate Baughey with nine points. Mark Isenberg, who struggled to an 1-of-11 night from the field, added six points.

“We missed a lot of shots,” said first-year Blackford coach John McGlothlin. “I told our guys those shots are going to fall eventually. ... I thought we got some good looks at times, but they just didn’t go in.”

Evans leads Pats

Jay County’s junior varsity team owned the final three quarters, topping Blackford 41-25.

After a difficult first quarter in which both teams scored just two points, the Patriots put up 12 in the second for a 14-9 halftime lead. They expanded the lead to eight points after three quarters and put up 18 in the fourth to pull away.

Randy Evans set the pace with nine points for Jay County, and Casey Waters added six. Luke McClung and Jon Wenger each scored five points.

Mark Begley, Jason Glancy and Micah Seidner each had four points for the Bruins.[[In-content Ad]]
