Jay volleyball third at OAC tourney (10/04/04)

MUNCIE — Jay County’s volleyball team went 1-2, finishing third at the Olympic Athletic Conference tournament at Muncie Wilson Middle School Saturday. More importantly, coach Fred Medler was happy with his team’s effort, saying it played “excellent” volleyball throughout the day.

The Patriots got their lone victory over defending champion Anderson Highland 25-20, 25-23. They lost 25-22, 23-25, 25-23 to Muncie Southside and 25-18, 25-20 to 2004 champion Connersville.

Erin St. Myers carried the day for Jay County, finishing second on the team in kills, digs and points with 18, 16 and 12 respectively.

Ashley Overla had a team-best 24 kills and three blocks. Julie Sours had 28 digs, and Janae Roush and Miranda Tingley each scored 13 points and Erica Clark had 35 assists.

Tingley also had 13 assists, and Leah Gasparovic finished with 12 assists. Kelly Sautbine had 17 kills, 11 digs and 10 points, Clark finished with 13 digs and 10 points and Theresa Reinhart had 11 digs.

Sautbine and Clark paced the victory over Highland. Sautbine had seven points and seven digs, and Clark added 14 assists and five points.

St. Myers had 10 digs, Overla had eight kills and Tingley notched seven points.

St. Myers had 12 digs, seven points, six kills and two blocks in the loss to Muncie Southside. Overla had 11 kills, Roush had eight points and Clark had 11 assists.

In the loss to Connersville St. Myers had six kills, six digs and two points. Clark had nine assists, Overla notched three blocks and Roush, Tingley and Reinhart each scored three points.

Giants top boys soccer

MARION — Jay County’s boys soccer team was outshot for one of the few times this season Saturday in a 4-1 loss to the Marion Giants.

Chad Keen evened the scored at 1-1 with a goal at the 18-minute mark of the first half, but that was as good as the situation would get for the Patriots. Marion took a 2-1 lead at halftime, and scored twice after the intermission.

The Giants took 14 shots on goal, compared to just five for Jay County (7-7). Derek Mills came up with 10 saves.

Jay County’s junior varsity team also lost to Marion, 4-0.

JC freshman spikers go 1-3

CHARLOTTESVILLE — The Jay County freshman volleyball team managed one victory, finishing 1-3 at the Eastern Hancock Invitational Saturday.

The Patriots’ win came over Lawrence Central 25-12, 25-17. They lost to Eastern Hancock 25-18, 15-25, 25-19, Southport 26-24, 20-25, 25-13 and Rushville 25-21, 25-21.

Sarah Mescher led the victory over Lawrence Central with nine points, including five aces. Brittany O’Dell added seven points, and Sharon Dirksen scored six.

Kari Brotherton posted all of her five points against Lawrence Central on aces.

Shelby Rines scored 11 points against Eastern Hancock, Stephanie Wellman had eight against Southport and O’Dell scored seven versus Rushville.[[In-content Ad]]
