Jay will open against 'Dogs again

INDIANAPOLIS — The Patriots will play the same opening-round opponent for the second straight season.
In the IHSAA volleyball tournament draw held this morning, Jay County came away with an opening-round match against New Haven.
JCHS (8-2) will play New Haven (9-16) in the opening match of Class 4A’s Sectional 6 at 6 p.m. on Oct. 18 at Fort Wayne South Side. Huntington North and Homestead will follow in the second match.
The Jay County/New Haven and Huntington North/Homestead winners will play in semifinal action at 11 a.m. on Oct. 20, and Wayne and the host Archers will play in the second semifinal match at 12:30 p.m. The championship match will follow at 6 p.m.
The Patriots lost to New Haven in five games in the opening round of the sectional last season, and fell again to the Bulldogs 25-20, 20-25, 27-25 at the Heritage Invitational in August.

SAHS draws Eagles
INDIANAPOLIS — The South Adams volleyball team got an opening-round match against the Churubusco Eagles in the state tournament draw held this morning.
The Starfires will play Churubusco in the second of two opening-round matches in Class 2A’s Sectional 36 at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at Bluffton. Eastside and the host Tigers will open the tournament at 6 p.m.
The winners of the Oct. 18 matches will advance to play in the semifinal round at 11 a.m. on Oct. 20. Bishop Luers will take on Adams Central in the other semifinal match at 12:30 p.m. The championship will follow at 4 p.m.

Eagles are unbeaten
DUNKIRK — The West Jay Middle School eighth grade football team scored four times in the first half Saturday as it stayed undefeated with a 36-22 victory over the visiting Southern Wells Raiders. The seventh graders are also unbeaten on the year after winning 24-0.
Justin Crouch got the scoring started for the WJMS eighth graders (6-0) as he tossed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Trewyn in the opening quarter. The Eagles also got short TD runs from Jacob Geesaman, Bowen May, Tyler Jester and Spencer Calvert. Donald Carty finished with five tackles.
Mitchell Ferguson gave the West Jay seventh grade squad (4-0-2) all the points it would need on a 31-yard run in the first quarter. Tyler Lowe added a 6-yard scoring run, and Cole Stigleman had a 60-yard TD run to go along with eight tackles.

Grimes lifts Steelers
Landon Grimes came through with the game on the line Saturday to lift the Steelers to a 14-13 victory over Union City in the Jay County Pee Wee Football third/fourth grade championship game.
Both teams scored in the second quarter and the game remained tied at 6-6 heading into overtime. Union City scored first and ran the ball in for a one-point conversion and a 13-6 lead. The Steelers responded with a touchdown and then chose to attempt a two-point kick, which Grimes hit to give his team the win.
Josh Crouch and Gavin Myers each scored TDs for the Steelers in the title game, and Myers scored the only touchdown in their 6-0 semifinal win over Monroe Central 2.
Caleb Webster scored the only touchdown in the fifth/sixth grade championship game to lead the Chiefs to a 6-0 win over the Bears. Storm McLaughlin, Hunter Mills and Matthew Franks each had TDs in the Chiefs’ 20-8 semifinal win over the Bengals.[[In-content Ad]]
