The defense has got to be better.
The offense wasn't quite in sync.
The team has a lot of work to do.
Jay County High School coach Craig Teagle had all those thoughts after his team's first game of the season Saturday night. But despite some bumps in the road, the Patriots kicked off the campaign with a 49-36 victory over the visiting Lakewood Park Panthers.
"It was a typical first game," said Teagle, whose squad took the first step toward a seventh straight 15-win season. "I thought we played a little sluggish.
"Unofficially, we had 10 turnovers in the first half against a 2-3 zone. You can't do that. A lot of it was just sloppy passing, not using pass fakes ... and we fumbled three or four that hit us right in the hands ..."
But after going without a field goal for nearly the first five minutes, the Patriots straightened some things out.
They finished the opening quarter on a 10-0 run, never trailed during the final three periods, shot better than 50 percent, out-rebounded a much taller squad and limited Lakewood Park to just 32 percent shooting.
After the early struggles, Jay County got a spark off the bench in the form of seniors Lance Franklin and Trey Dunn.
Franklin, who has not played basketball since his freshman season, hit five of his six field-goal attempts and was one of three Patriots in double figures with 12 points. He also grabbed five rebounds to help JCHS to its 27-20 advantage on the glass.
"Lance is just a competitor," said Teagle, noting that Franklin doesn't even truly feel comfortable in the team's system yet because of his couple of years off. "He just plays hard. ... We need his rebounding."
Dunn entered when Kyle Simmons picked up his second personal foul with 2:27 left in the first quarter.
His presence-helped right the offense, and he dished out a game-high four assists.
"Trey Dunn just comes out and plays as hard as he can," said Teagle "He just gets his nose in the plays. ...
"He was a big key against their zone. He started dribbling gaps, penetrating and pulling defense and delivering the ball. And then we got more ball movement.
"And then he made a couple really nice defensive plays - loose balls, knock-aways and so forth."
After the run to close the opening quarter, Lakewood Park never got closer than five points the rest of the way.
Adam Garringer led the Patriots in scoring with 16 points, Billy Wellman added 10 and Eric Homan scored eight. Garringer and Simmons each had three assists.
Homan led the rebounding effort for the under-sized JCHS squad with seven, and Wellman grabbed four.
"We've got to work on some toughness," said Panthers coach Don Davis. "We were letting too many balls come down to their level. We've got to go get the ball upstairs and then bring it down. ...
"They were just scrappy ... and tough and hard workers. They were just tougher than we were tonight."
Tommy Strine, a 6-foot-5-inch senior, was the only Lakewood Park player in double figures as he scored 12 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists. But he needed 21 field-goal attempts to attain that total, and got his shots blocked five times in the opening half.
Despite giving up five inches, Jacob Westlake had three of those blocks. Eric Homan and Adam Garringer each added a pair in the victory.
"Defensively, I thought we did a pretty good job most of the time on the Strine kid," said Teagle. "We contested shots pretty well."
Brock Taulbee added seven points and six rebounds for the Panthers, who went just 14-of-44 from the field and 5-of-11 at the foul line.
"We were just never able to smoothly get into what we wanted to do," said Davis. "Everything seemed forced.
"Part of that is working in a new point guard. ... It just takes time.
"We're big enough. We want to get the ball inside. And we were getting the ball inside. In the first half we had 12 close shots, good looks, and we made two of them. You can't do that."

Josh Beaty poured in nearly as many points as the entire Lakewood Park team in leading the Patriots to a 35-19 victory.
Beaty totaled 18 points in the victory for Jay County, which outscored the Panthers 19-6 in the second and third quarters. Garrett Krieg added eight points, and Brad Horn finished with seven.
Andrew Parish totaled seven points for Lakewood Park. Jordan Brooker followed with six, and Ryan Justice chipped in four.
