Jay wins OAC (10/08/2008)
JCHS cross country
ANDERSON - Connersville was the only team that could challenge the Patriots. And even it wasn't close.
Jay County High School's girls cross country team took seven of the top 12 positions Tuesday evening to win its sixth consecutive Olympic Athletic Conference championship.
The Patriots scored 28 points at Mounds State Park, 12 in front of the runner-up Spartans. Anderson Highland was a distant third at 80, and Muncie Southside (93) finished fourth.
The JCHS boys were last in the four-team conference with 101 points. Southside (32) won ahead of Highland (39) and Connersville (56).
Sophomore Aly Miller led Jay County to what has become its usual finish, successfully defending her own OAC crown. She won in 20-minutes, 51 seconds, which was about 30 seconds faster than her winning time last season.
Two Spartans followed Miller - Katie Ross was the runner-up 10 seconds behind Miller - but Connersville settled for just three runners in the top 10. All of the Patriots' five scoring runners finished in the top 10, and the next two took 11th and 12th.
Sisters Kylie Wellman, a senior, and Leah Wellman, a sophomore, joined Miller in earning all-conference honors. Kylie placed fourth in 22:14, and Leah was 18 seconds behind in fifth.
Senior Cassie Laux placed eighth with a time of 23:15, and junior Kari Hemmelgarn capped the team score in 10th at 23:26. Logan Laux finished 11th in 23:52, and Katie Simmons was 12th at 24:29.
Tevan Nichols was the only Patriot boy to place in the top 15, finishing 11th in 18:22. Austin Bentz was 17th at 19:45 followed by Branden Brinton (23rd - 21:19), Spencer Grady (24th - 21:33) and Zach Johnson (26th - 25:35).
