The Jay County Summer Swim Team went on a record-breaking spree Saturday. It needed almost all of them.
Setting seven new conference records and several more team records, Jay County held off South Adams for a 2,414-23751/2 victory in the Wabash Valley Conference Championships at Goodrich Park Pool in Winchester.
Wells Community was third with 1,688 points in the six-team event.
Anne Vormohr and Sophie Bader led the team as the strong 8-and-younger girls group won every event and set new WVC records in seven out of eight. They each knocked down a mark which stood for 23 years.
Vormohr broke the long-standing backstroke record, finishing in 20.2 seconds. Bader snapped the short freestyle mark set in 1983, winning in 17.89.
Other conference records for Vormohr, which also bettered her own team records, came in the long freestyle (35.87) and individual medley (1-minute, 33.29 seconds). Bader added a record-breaking win in the butterfly in 19.14. The long freestyle, butterfly and individual medley records were set in 1992 by Jay County’s Abby Arnold.
In addition to their individual success, Vormohr and Bader teamed with Madi Long and Cori Stone to set two new conference and team relay records. The quartet snapped Adams Central’s 20-year-old record in the medley relay by more than five seconds in 1:26.63, and destroyed the 19-year-old South Adams record in the freestyle relay by nearly eight seconds in 1:14.24.
Jay County added four more team records, three of which came from Cori Vormohr in the 15-and-older division.
One of Cori Vormohr’s records was new as she broke Taylor Fullenkamp’s mark in the breaststroke at 1:22.12. She improved upon her own records in the butterfly and individual medley at 1:11.27 and 2:41.21 respectively.
Tom McCord picked up the other record, also in the 15-and-older division. He bested his own record in the short freestyle at 27.07.
Anne Vormohr and Cori Vormohr each had three conference titles with their record breaking swims, and Bader touched the wall first in the breaststroke as well to give her three victories. Caitlin Mark also won three championships, taking first place in the 9-10-year-old girls long freestyle, butterfly and individual medley.
Jay County added three double-event winners, with Aaron Hudson taking first in the 13-14-year-old boys long freestyle and butterfly. Eme Miller and Lucas Holcomb did the job in the 11-12-year-old division, winning the girls long freestyle and butterfly and the boys backstroke and short freestyle respectively.
Adding single conference titles were Katy Smeltzer, Rhianon Mills, Michaela Long, Caleb Hummel, Ali Miller, Neal Fennig and Perry Hull. Jay County also picked up titles in 12 out of 20 relays.[[In-content Ad]]
