ANDERSON — With Josh Thornburg and Bill Spahr leading the charge, the Jay County wrestling team avenged an earlier loss to the Muncie Southside Rebels en route to a runner-up finish in the Olympic Athletic Conference tournament Monday.
Thornburg and Spahr accounted for the Patriots’ two titles as the team went 2-1 on the evening. They defeated Southside 48-34 and Connersville 51-26, and lost to champion Anderson Highland 54-18.
Spahr, who was the lone champion for Jay County last year, defended his title with a 3-0 record as he took the 171-pound crown. Thornburg, a senior, won his first OAC championship by going 3-0 at 112 pounds.
Also adding winning records for Jay County were Josh Lochtefeld (103), Kade Poore (135), Devon Huftel (152), Rod Cassel (189) and Tom Smith (215), all of whom finished 2-1.
Spahr (24-4) will be seeded third at this weekend’s sectional tournament at Jay County, and Thornburg (20-4) is the No. 4 seed.
Kurtis Hess (140) and Nathan Conatser (189) are both No. 2 seeds for the tournament. Hess has a 20-2 record this year, and Conatser is 21-8. Devon Huftel is seeded fourth at 152 pounds with a 19-10 record.
South Adams has five wrestlers seeded in the top four for the tournament, with Brandon Brown (103) leading the way with a No. 1 seed and a 30-2 record. Josh Mann (112) and Cole Gentis (119) hold 29-3 and 17-13 records respectively and each are No. 2 seeds.
