Jay's first opponent starts season at No. 9 (08/17/04)
Local Roundup
Jay County will face its toughest competition in its opening game. At least, that’s what The Associated Press thinks.
The Delta Eagles, the Patriot football team’s first opponent, opened the season ranked ninth Class 4A in the AP state football poll. They got 73 ratings points, including a first-place vote on one of the 15 ballots.
Jay County will open against Delta, a team it hasn’t beaten since 1992, at home Friday at 7:30 p.m. The struggles have been worse in recent years as the Patriots have been shut out three straight times — 52-0 in 2001, 14-0 in 2002 and 42-0 in 2003.
The Eagles started the 2003 season at 7-0, but lost their final two regular-season games to drop out of the AP top 10. They defeated Pendleton Heights in the sectional opener, but lost in the semifinal round to the eventual sectional champion Muncie Central Bearcats.
Muncie Central is ranked third in the AP’s Class 4A preseason poll.
Delta is the only preseason ranked team on Jay County’s schedule, although several other squads are knocking on the door.
Lafayette Jefferson, which the Patriots visit Oct. 1, and Blackford, the week two opponent, each finished 15th in the preseason voting in their respective classes. Jefferson picked up 28 points in Class 5A, and Blackford had 21 points in Class 3A.
Also, Southern Wells (week three) was tabbed by one voter and finished 30th in the Class A voting.
Patriots fall to Highland
She couldn’t celebrate it with a team win, but Trisha Champ did herself proud on her birthday. The Jay County freshman shot a career-best 43 to pace the Patriot girls golf team in a 176-209 loss to the Anderson Highland Scots Monday.
Katie Kohler followed Champ’s effort with a 54, and Brianne Morrical came in with a 55. Alissa McMillan completed the team score with a personal-best 57.
Shonda Sutton shot 61, and Miranda Denney hit for a 62.
Stars drop opener
The South Adams volleyball team had a rough start to its season, dropping its season opening match by a 25-15, 25-16, 25-20 score to the Norwell Knights.
The Starfires never got much offense going as junior setter Alyssa Miller shared the team lead in kills (four) with Robyn Habegger and Renee Neuenschwander. Miller also posted 15 assists.
Habegger added eight digs and three aces in the defeat, and Brooke Fox had seven digs.
South Adams’ junior varsity lost 25-20, 25-13.
