ANDERSON — Maria Murphy followed her victory last week at Indiana Wesleyan University with a runner-up finish Saturday as the Jay County High School track team hosted the Patriot Invitational at Anderson University.
Murphy led a group of four Patriot girls who finished in the top 10, taking second place in the shot put. She had a toss of 40 feet, 6 ½ inches, trailing only Sonya Napariu (40 feet, 9 inches) of New Palestine. Her best throw during the outdoor season a year ago was 40 feet, ½ inch.
Katie Simmons added a fifth-place finish in the 3,200-meter run in 11 minutes, 37.93 seconds. Morgan Link was sixth in the 55 hurdles in 9.63, and Amber Huelskamp placed ninth in the long jump at 14 feet, 7½ inches.
Cory Robertson led the boys team in 21st place in the 55 hurdles with a time of 9.85.
Batt wins at Classic
DEKALB, Ill. — Todd Batt earned a victory Sunday as he competed in the Indiana/Illinois All-Star Classic Duals wrestling tournament.
Batt, a South Adams senior, defeated Maxx Hubbard of Newman Central Catholic 8-4. Hubbard was the Illinois Class A 132-pound state champion and finished his senior season with a 41-2 record.
During his senior year Batt went 47-3 to set the Starfire record for wins in a season and break the record for career wins with 152. He became the first Starfire to compete in the state championship match, finishing as the state runner-up.

FORT WAYNE — South Adams runners finished second in both 800-meter races Saturday at the Allen County Athletic Conference Indoor Meet at IPFW’s Gates Center.
Logan Steiner fell less than a half-second short of victory in the boys 800 run, placing second in 2:15.47 behind Adams Central’s Gavin Kaehr (2:15). Kristen Muselman was the runner-up in the girls event as she finished in 2:46.83 behind Leo’s Jenna Beer (2:42.24).
Twins Leah and Hannah Mitchel each finished in the top four in the girls shot put for the Starfires. Leah placed third with a toss of 30 feet, 9 inches, and Hannah followed in fourth at 30 feet, 7 inches.
