Local Roundup

Jay County needed to use the Marion Invitational to bounce back from Thursday’s rough loss against Bellmont and prepare for the upcoming sectional tournament. It did both of those things Saturday.

The Patriot volleyball team went 2-1 along with the host Giants and Eastbrook in the four-team event, taking first place by way of the tiebreaker.

Jay County (13-20) defeated Marion, a team it had lost to earlier in the season at the Jay County Invitational, by a score of 20-22, 21-13, 25-24, 21-14. It also topped Northfield 14-21, 21-19, 21-11, 22-20, with the lone loss on the day coming against Eastbrook by a 21-19, 21-23, 17-21, 21-13, 15-8 score.

Sara Hough paced the Patriots in each of the three matches with a high of 13 kills against Eastbrook and 24 digs against Northfield. She finished the day with 31 kills, 58 digs, 18 points and five aces.

Ashley Overla had a team-high 25 points to go with 22 kills, and Shannon O’Dell had 23 kills. Becki Beeler scored 24 points, 11 of which came on aces.

Sarah Ainsworth finished with 91 assists, and Erin St. Myers had 45 digs.

The next match for Jay County is a sectional first round contest versus Elwood Thursday at Delta at 6 p.m.

Patriots headed to state

It’s back to the state meet again for the Jay County cheerleaders.

The Patriots competed in the Indiana Cheer Association regional competition at Mount Vernon Saturday, placing third in the varsity 3A division. Pendleton Heights was first, and host Mount Vernon took second as the top three teams earned spots in the state finals Saturday, Nov. 8 at New Castle.

Jay County combined its varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders to compete as one squad at the ICA event for the second straight year. Last season they finished tied for second at the regional before placing fourth in the state event.

East Jay placed sixth in the junior high division, and West Jay was ninth.

Moving on

The season is over for the Fort Recovery cross country teams, with the exception of senior Jason Groff. He placed 12th in the district meet Saturday to qualify for the regional round this week.

Firebirds split pair

The Jay County Firebirds under-14 soccer team avenged a previous loss Saturday 6-1 over New Castle. The Firebirds lost to Rushville Sunday 5-0.

Chase Ainsworth and Dustin Fox each had a pair of goals in the victory. Patrick Johnson and Adam Horn each added two, and Fox and Horn had one assist apiece.

Derek Bartlett finished with 15 saves. In the Sunday defeat, Bartlett made eight saves for Jay County (5-6-1).[[In-content Ad]]
