HARTFORD CITY — The Patriots picked up their fourth win of the season on Monday. Getting another in the tournament will be a challenge.
Jay County’s victory came by a 5-0 score over the host Blackford Bruins, and in the girls tennis tournament draw the team lined up with the nine-time defending sectional champion Marion Giants.
Emily Huntsman led the squad Monday with her 6-4, 6-1 victory over Alisha McGahey at No. 1 singles. Each of the other singles matches ended with the same score as Jessica Ooten topped Rachael Baker at No. 2 and Rachel Ray defeated Erica Reid at No. 3.
Ashley Caupp and Danielle Chenoweth added a No. 1 doubles win by a 6-4, 6-2 score over Katelyn Freel and Lindsee Fancher, and Alicia Degler and Kyla McKibben rallied from a first-set defeat to top Whitney Hapner and Hope Miller 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
JCHS and Marion will meet in the opening round of the Marion sectional Wednesday at 5 p.m. The winner will advance to play Mississinewa in the semifinal round Thursday, with Blackford and Madison-Grant meeting in the other semifinal match.
The championship will be Friday at 5 p.m., and the winner will advance to the regional tournament at Peru.
The Patriots fell 5-0 to Marion in the sectional semifinal round in 2010 and again during the regular season this year.

Jay golfers split
CONNERSVILLE — Jay County’s boys golf team split a three-team matchMonday with a score of 181 at Willowbrook Golf Club. The Patriots defeated the Muncie Southside Rebels (202), but finished behind the Connersville Spartans (154).
Evan Mathias put together a run of four pars in five holes as he led the Patriots with a 42. Cole Adams paced Connersville with a 4-under-par 32, and Drendon Resler shot 45 for Southside.
Drew Houck and Evan Ryder each shot 45 to follow Mathias, and Justen Keller rounded out the team score with a 49. Ritchie Carducci finished at 50.

W-D tops JC softball
GASTON — The Wes-Del Warriors scored once in the bottom of the ninth inning Monday to hand the Jay County softball team its second extra-inning loss of the season 5-4.
The Patriots (5-9), who also fell to Norwell in nine innings, had a 4-2 lead thanks to Nikka Chaney’s three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning.
However, Wes-Del responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame to tie the score and went on to win in nine innings.
Chaney took the loss, giving up five runs on five hits and a walk in nine innings. She struck out four batters, and just two of the runs against her were earned.
Rachelle Jackson went 2-for-2 with a run, two walks and a stolen base. Katlin Petro also had a hit and a run.

SA tennis falls
FORT WAYNE — The Starfires dropped their final match of the regular season Friday, falling 5-0 to the host Blackhawk Christian Braves.
The closest match came at No. 2 doubles, where Mallory Eicher and Faith VonGunten fell 6-4, 6-1 to Kelli Rich and La Issa Clark. Lindsey Graber and Holly Taylor dropped the No. 1 doubles match 6-3, 6-0 to Holly Vanlaar and Leha Zijlstra.
In singles action Aine O’Donnell lost 6-0, 6-1 to Morgan Bemisderfer, Alex Fox fell 6-1, 6-1 to Makinzie Holb and Abbie Campbell lost 6-0, 6-2 to Sara Wyall.
The junior varsity team won 3-2 with victories from Megan Hreha, Erika Miller and the team of Tiffany Yoder and Shiana Scott.

Waters suffers loss
MODENA, Italy — Jay County High School graduate Mitch Waters gave up just one unearned run Saturday, but took the loss as the Sala Baganza Baseball Club fell 1-0 to Modena in 11 innings.
He allowed just six hits and a walk while striking out 10 batters in 10-plus innings. The only run scored when Sala Baganza committed two errors on a single play.
Waters is 3-2 on the season and ranks second in Italy’s Serie 2A with a 0.73 ERA. He is fifth in strikeouts with 55, and opposing batters are hitting just .195 against him.

Myers paces Ponderosa
Gavin Myers finished 3-for-3 Monday to lead Ponderosa to a 12-2 victory over Jay County Monuments in Portland Junior League Rookie baseball.
Myers had doubles in each of his first two at bats and added a single in Ponderosa’s seven-run fourth inning. He drove in four runs, and Adrek Pogue added three hits, three runs and two RBIs.
Landon Grimes doubled and scored a run for Monuments.[[In-content Ad]]
