GAS CITY - It came a day later than expected, but Kirk Comer got what he wanted.
When the pairings for the girls basketball sectional tournaments were drawn last week, Comer said he wasn't interested in his Patriots getting a bye. He wanted them to play an opening-round game, hoping they could get on a roll.
After a snow-out Tuesday, Jay County fulfilled their coach's wish Wednesday as they hit 15 3-pointers in a 70-14 slaughter of the Blackford Bruins in the Class 3A tournament at Mississinewa.
"I think we accomplished the things we needed to accomplish tonight," said Comer, whose team had lost three straight to end the season. "We needed to come out and play well and play with a lot of intensity. I thought we did that throughout.
"We got a lot of people involved. The main thing at this time of year ... is you want to have confidence going through the tournament. I think we got a lot of girls confident tonight, which will be huge for Friday night."
Tipton awaits JCHS in Friday's semifinal round at 6 p.m. after knocking off the Delta 52-45 in Wednesday's other opening-round game.
Although the Patriots won their regular-season meeting 43-14 over Blackford (1-19), it came in difficult fashion. They missed their first 13 field-goal tries of that game, including 10 from 3-point range. They shot just 25 percent from the field in that game and 4-of-26 (15 percent) from long distance.
Wednesday night's sectional blowout of the Bruins saw a complete turnaround from Jay County's outside shooters.
The team had four triples by the end of the first quarter and shot a ridiculous 15-of-28 (53 percent) from beyond the arc. Senior Sara Garringer went 5-of-8 from long distance for her game-high 15 points, and Cassandra Huelskamp joined her in double figures with 12 points as all of her four field goals came from 3-point range.
Whitney Homan added a 3-for-4 effort on the long balls for nine points, Kaelee Keller scored eight with two 3-pointers and Theresa Reinhart added one triple.
"We've got good shooters," said Comer before quickly turning his attention to his team's defense. "We're not going to shoot like that probably again, but we can defend like we did tonight. We can do that again on Friday night. And if we can defend, we'll have a chance every game."
The defensive effort for Jay County (12-8) Wednesday included shutouts in the first and third quarters.
The Bruins finished the opening quarter 0-for-5 with eight turnovers before scoring their first point on a Kolby Coy free throw 26 seconds into the second quarter. They went 10:38 before making their first shot from the field, a two-pointer from Kirby Glancy after an 0-for-6 start with 11 turnovers.
The Patriots, who led 21-0 after the opening quarter, were up by 33 after Sara Garringer drained a 3-point to close out the opening half.
Blackford finished just 6-of-24 (25 percent) shooting for the game. It also turned the ball over 27 times compared to just six for Jay County.
"We took good care of the basketball," said Comer. "We made smart decisions. I thought mentally we were focused. That's the key right now is to be mentally prepared ..."
Huelskamp, Lindsey Wellman and Pazia Speed each grabbed five rebounds for the Patriots, who earned a 32-25 advantage on the glass. Keller and Dana Horn dished out four assists apiece.
Glancy scored seven points to lead the Bruins. Victoria Lee had six rebounds, and Holly Musselman finished with three assists.
Tipton 52, Delta 45
The Tipton Blue Devils earned a spot in Friday's semifinal round against Jay County as they pulled away from the Delta Eagles in the final minute for a 52-45 victory.
Delta (7-13) had a 36-35 lead after three quarters and the game remained tight heading into the final minutes. But Tipton (10-11) grabbed back-to-back offensive rebounds after missed free throws in the final minute to take away any chance at an Eagle comeback.
Monica Planalp finished with 18 points to pace the Blue Devils. Kayla Friend joined her in double figures with 12.
Sarah Miller led all scorers with 27 points for the Eagles. Alissa Calhoun added 10 points, and Demi Selvey scored eight.
Tipton lost seven of its first 10 games to open the season, but has gone 6-3 in the 2007 portion of its schedule.[[In-content Ad]]
