BERNE — Jay County won back-to-back games for the first time in nearly two months Tuesday. The South Adams Starfires are left still searching for its second win of the season.

The visiting Patriots turned 33 forced turnovers into 20 extra field-goal attempts as they rolled over South Adams 63-42 Tuesday.

Jay County (9-8) had not won two games in a row since capping a four-game streak with a 46-39 victory over Bluffton Nov. 29. But it has used stifling early defense to score double-digit wins over Connersville and South Adams.

The Patriots held Connersville without a field goal for the first 14 minutes in their 46-34 victory Saturday, and kept the Starfires off the scoreboard for the first minutes Tuesday.

“We came out with good intensity,” said JCHS coach Kirk Comer of the defense, “but we had a little let-down in the second quarter. We got off to a slow start offensively, but if you play good defense you can always stay in games.”

Comer’s crew turned the ball over on each of its first three possessions, causing the coach to take a time-out just 1:19 into the contest. The Patriots went on a 12-0 run when they returned to the floor, not allowing a South Adams field goal for the first six minutes of the game.

South Adams committed turnovers on its first four possessions and gave the ball away 11 times in the opening quarter. It didn’t score until a couple of Julie Muhlenkamp free throws at the 3:03 mark. It’s first field goal came from Katie Nichols with 1:56 on the first-quarter clock.

“It’s the same old story,” said Starfire coach Doug Beall, whose team slipped to 1-12. “When you turn the ball over as many times as we do and you shoot as poorly as we do there’s no margin for error.”

After trailing 12-0, South Adams pulled to within six points early in the second period. But after another time-out the Patriots went on an 8-0 run and the Starfires never got within single digits again.

South Adams could not overcome its giant deficit in field-goal attempts as it finished 12-of-35 (34 percent). Jay County made 24 of its 55 tries, shooting 44 percent.

Still, Beall said he’s been proud of the way his team has kept battling despite its record.

“We had every reason to quit tonight, but we didn’t,” said Beall. “There have been a lot of games where we’ve gotten drilled ... but we definitely didn’t quit tonight. We had a couple lulls, but we definitely didn’t quit.”

Jay County finished with more turnovers than Comer would have liked (21), but also had some solid passing with 17 assists on 24 made field goals. Seven different Patriots recorded assists, with Dana Horn and Abby Loy sharing the team high of four. Sara Garringer and Markie Runyon each added three.

Cassandra Huelskamp paced the JCHS scoring attack with 12 points. She also led the squad with five rebounds.

Garringer and Loy finished with 10 points apiece, and Whitney Homan scored nine points.

After a pair of convincing wins Jay County faces a difficult three-game stretch to close the schedule. It will visit Ohio’s Division III No. 10 Coldwater (10-2) Tuesday, followed by a home game against Anderson (10-6) and a visit to sectional rival Delta.

“We just want to continue to get better,” said Comer of his goals before sectional play begins. “We can always work on our defense.

“Another thing I think will be a key in the tournament is our rebounding. We have to become a better rebounding team.”

No Starfire player reached double figures against the Patriots as Erin McCollum finished with a team-high nine points. Julie Muhlenkamp added eight points.

Andrea Moser grabbed six rebounds for South Adams, and Kayla Coblentz had three assists.

Jay County dominated the opening quarter and cruised to a 42-18 victory over the Starfires.

The Patriots built a 14-2 first-quarter lead, and remained up by double digits at halftime. They outscored South Adams 22-8 in the second half.

Gina Muhlenkamp led the Jay County victory with 10 points. Amber Edmundson added nine points, and Natasha Stout and Brittany O’Dell each had six.

Abby Lehman paced South Adams with six points, and Ashton Morgan finished with five.[[In-content Ad]]
