The Bellmont Squaws are not pushovers.
They came to Jay County High School Thursday night with a 3-0 record.
Two of those were double-digit wins. The third was a three-point victory over Concordia Lutheran, a team that has posted three consecutive 15-win seasons.
The Patriot girls basketball team promptly put up 26 first-quarter points, and then posted a shutout in the second. In all, the Squaws went 13 minutes between field goals and JCHS led by as many as 41 in its 62-30 victory.
"I thought we took them out of what they do," said JCHS coach Kirk Comer. "I've seen them play two times, and that's not the team I saw. I think a lot of it was because of our defense. We guarded their shooters, and they were struggling to get shots."
On the game's opening possession Kaelee Keller hit a 3-pointer, the first of four in the opening quarter and 10 in the game for the Patriots (3-0). They built a 19-5 lead, and were up 26-13 at the quarter break before locking down the defense.
After Janelle Rhoades' 3-pointer with 1:03 left in the first quarter, Bellmont did not score again until Rhoades made a pair of free throws 1:33 into the third. Its next field goal didn't come until after the mid-point of the third period, when Jamie Hakes scored off an assist from Carrie Terveer.
The Squaws (3-1) turned the ball over 14 times in the first half and shot 0-for-9 from the field in the second quarter.
Meanwhile, Jay County was on fire.
Brittany Mann came up with a steal leading to the opening basket of the second quarter, and then Cara Garringer nailed back-to-back 3-pointers off of assists from Keller. Erin Hunt, who made a 3-pointer to close the first quarter, added another triple in the second, and Garringer hit her third to close the first-half scoring and give the Patriots a 42-13 lead.
Garringer hit each of her first four 3-point attempts and finished 6-of-8 from the field for 16 points.
"That was the Cara we've been waiting on," said Comer.
"She had a good night tonight. Hopefully she can continue to build on that. She's another scorer to add to the other girls."
What should be scary for opposing teams is that JCHS built its first-half lead mostly without junior Pazia Speed, who was among the team's top two scorers in the first two games of the season. She picked up two fouls in the first three minutes and played sparingly, but there were plenty of others to fill the void.
Junior Lindsey Wellman made all of her five field-goal attempts and scored 14 points, and Keller shot 4-of-7 from the field for 12 points. Mann scored eight points, and Hunt had her pair of 3-pointers for six.
The Patriots shot 65 percent (11-of-17) in the first quarter. They went 10-of-22 from 3-point range for the game.
"It's hard to scout us. It's hard to guard us," said Comer, whose team also finished with just 11 turnovers. "The girls are very unselfish. It doesn't matter who gets the points. They spread the ball around. Tonight it was Cara Garringer hitting the shots."
In addition to her scoring, Keller put on another passing display. After dishing out eight assists Nov. 14 against Muncie Southside, she added another seven against the Squaws.
"She can score ... but she can handle the ball with the best off them," said Comer. "She gets the ball where it needs to go and gets it in our shooters hands.
"I think the difference between this year's team and a lot of other teams I've had is we get the shooters a good pass where they're able to shoot."
Mann added four assists. Wellman and Mackenzie Loy each grabbed five rebounds.
Bellmont (3-1) had just 21 points through the first three-and-a-half quarters before hitting three 3-pointers in the closing minutes. They shot just 23 percent in the first three quarters, and finished the game with 23 turnovers.
Rhoades scored 18 points, hitting 4-of-5 3-pointers and all of her six free throws. But no other Squaw totaled more than four points.

The Patriots outscored Bellmont 20-10 in the second and third quarters on the way to a 34-27 victory.
Danielle Link powered Jay County as she scored all of her eight points in the first half. Brittany Manor hit a pair of 3-pointers for six points, and Jordan McMillan added five points.
Abby Stimpson's nine points were a team-high for the Squaws. Sara Williamson followed with eight points.[[In-content Ad]]
