JC finishes 2nd at relay meet

BLUFFTON — Jay County won 11 girls events, but couldn’t quite keep up with the host team.
Wells Community scored 1,917 points to take the title Saturday at the Wabash Valley Conference Relays while the Jay County Summer Swim Team finished as the runner-up with 1,718. South Adams (1,357) was third, and Bellmont (690) followed in fourth.
Jay County dominated the 9-10-year-old girls division, with Ashlyn Down, Lillian Clemmons and Eliza Bader contributing to all five wins. They teamed with Abilene Hough in the medley and backstroke relays, Elayna Paro in the butterfly, Ryleigh Oswalt in the breaststroke and Gracie Saxman in the freestyle.
Cassie Reno, Jamie Valentine, Sydney Mathias and Alex Bader added a pair of victories as they took the 13-14-year-old girls medley and freestyle relays. Breea Liette joined Bader, Valentine and Mathias in winning the breaststroke relay.

Timmerman leads
MONTPELIER — Cody Timmerman led a group of area drivers who competed Saturday at Montpelier Motor Speedway.
Timmerman, Fort Recovery, was the only local driver to finish in the top eight as he placed sixth in the Super Streets race. Curtis Heiser, also of Fort Recovery, followed in ninth.
Portland’s Travis Nichols and Steve Mills were 14th and 20th respectively in the Thunder Cars event. Todd Weaver finished 12th in the UMP Modifieds B Main race.


Frontline wins
Frontline Construction struggled to find hits Friday, but still knocked off First Bank of Berne 5-2 in Portland Junior League Minor softball.
Shelby Hiestand led the victory with a hit and a run. Logan Poore had the only other hit for Frontline.
Kayla Hurt singled and scored the lone run for First Bank of Berne.

Myers hits ace
Larry Myers highlighted Wednesday’s action in Portland Golf Club’s men’s summer league with a hole-in-one.
Myers used a 5-wood to ace the 172-yard, par-3 15th hole at PGC. Kirk Mowrer, Dave Rigby and Dave Brown witnessed the shot.[[In-content Ad]]
