INDIANAPOLIS - The Patriots will open the sectional tournament against a team they haven't played for more than 30 years. The Starfires will meet the same team two weeks in a row.
The Jay County High School football team drew a quarterfinal game at New Haven in the IHSAA tournament draw held Tuesday, and South Adams was selected to visit Class A No. 8 Southern Wells. Both games will be Friday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m.
JCHS (2-6) and New Haven (4-4) have met just twice in the schools' history, with the Patriots winning 27-0 in 1976 and 22-8 in 1977. They do not play any common opponents during the regular season.
The other game in the top half of the Class 4A Sectional 12 bracket has Wayne (5-3) visiting Marion (4-4).
The bottom half of the bracket pits the teams with the two best records as No. 8 Fort Wayne South Side (7-1) visits fifth-ranked Delta (8-0). Also, Muncie Central (3-5) will play at Muncie Southside (4-4).
If JCHS defeats New Haven, it will play either at home against Marion or on the road versus Wayne in the semifinal round.
Jay County has lost all three games it has played against sectional opponents this year. Two of those losses came to Muncie Southside, 41-22 and 20-6, and the other came by a 56-6 score to Delta.
In other games between Sectional 12 opponents it was Delta 42, Muncie Southside 10; Muncie Southside 12, Muncie Central 7; Marion 34, Muncie Central 14; and Fort Wayne South Side 24, Wayne 7.
For the second time in three years South Adams (4-4) and Southern Wells (6-2) will play each other in consecutive weeks. The teams close the regular season Friday in Berne before meeting again a week later in Poneto in the sectional.
In 2007 the teams met in back-to-back weeks, both hosted by the Starfires, when South Adams prevailed 42-31 and 37-18 for its only two wins of the season.
The other game in the lower half of the Class A Sectional 35 bracket is Northfield (2-6) visiting Fremont (4-4). In the top half No. 6 Churubusco (7-1) hosts Adams Central while Southwood (3-5) travels to North Miami (5-3).
South Adams defeated the only sectional foe it has played thus far this year, beating Adams Central 21-7. In other games between Section 35 rivals it was Southern Wells 27, Southwood 7; Southern Wells 27, Adams Central 0; Southwood 28, Northfield 14; Southwood 40, North Miami 14; North Miami 30, Northfield 24 in triple overtime; and Churubusco 14, Fremont 0.
Sectional semifinal games will be Oct. 30, and the sectional championship round will be Nov. 6.[[In-content Ad]]
