JC girls win at Southside

MUNCIE — It was another successful day for the Patriots on the sectional track.
Jay County High School’s girls track team scored 82 points Thursday to defeat Connersville (52) and Muncie Southside (22) in a three-team meet.
The JCHS boys team scored 58 points to finish behind Connersville (88) and ahead of the host Rebels (10).
Ciera Barcus and Malarie Houck each won two events for the Patriot girls, who won the Muncie Southside Invitational April 29 and will return to the same track for the sectional tournament on Tuesday. Barcus took the high jump at 5 feet even and the long jump at 15 feet, 6¾ inches, and Houck posted winning times of 16.3 in the 100-meter hurdles and 49.97 in the 300 hurdles.
Zane Shreve also won the 300 hurdles for the boys team in 40.83 seconds. He teamed with Darren Bogenschutz, Jalen Ryder and Dylan Cope to win the 4x400 relay.
Adding wins for the girls team were Katie Snyder (100 dash), Abigail Johnson (1,600 run), Morgan Brown (400 dash), Emma Laux (200 dash) and Sara Lennartz (discus). Tyler Back won the boys shot put, and Andrew Eley was first in the discus.

SA falls to No. 2 Jets
MONROE — The visiting South Adams baseball team fell behind by eight runs to the Class 2A No. 2 Adams Central Flying Jets on Thursday on the way to an 11-4 loss.
Adams Central scored once in the first inning and then blew the game open with six runs in the second. The Starfires got on the board with a run in the fifth inning and added three more in the sixth.
Collin Affolder suffered the loss, although five of the nine runs against him in 4 1/3 innings were unearned. He gave up eight hits and five walks.
Corey Seffernick paced the SAHS offense with a single, a double, an RBI and a run. Collin Affolder had two doubles, and Jared Rife finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Patriot netters fall
BLUFFTON — Jay County’s girls tennis team slipped to 3-9 Thursday with a 5-0 loss to the Bluffton Tigers.
Avery Loyd of the Patriots overcame a first-set loss to send her No. 2 singles match against Sammy Gilliam to a third set. But she fell 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (8-6).
In other singles matches, Miranda Reinhart lost 6-2, 6-0 to Amanda Stone at No. 1 and Brooke Fraley lost 6-0, 6-1 to Sierra Steffen at No. 2.
Sydney Bost and Morgan Kaufman dropped the No. 1 doubles match 6-1, 6-4 to Hunter Cunningham and Allison Williams. At No. 2 doubles, Faith Parr and Emily Westgerdes lost to Rachel Bertsch and Lauren Stauffer 6-1, 6-4.
JCHS won the junior varsity match 4-2 with Jessica Kerrigan turning in a shutout victory at No. 1 singles.

Stars fall to AC
MONROE — An early lead was short-lived for the South Adams softball team Thursday as it fell 17-7 in five innings to the host Adams Central Flying Jets.
SAHS was on top after scoring twice in the top of the first inning, but Adams Central scored three times in the bottom of the first and five times in the fifth to take control. The Jets added seven runs in the fifth inning to end the game early.
Alyssa Bluhm suffered the loss, allowing 11 runs — nine earned — on 12 hits and a walk in two innings.
Rachel Hirschy finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs to lead the Starfire offense. Lauren Smith had a double and two RBIs, and Alexis Ford added a double, an RBI and a run.
