JC girls win Blackford invite

HARTFORD CITY — Friday’s event basically turned into a dual meet between the Patriots and the Bulldogs.
Out of 16 events at the Blackford Invitational, the Jay County High School girls track team won eight to take first place with 174 points. Runner-up New Haven was right behind with seven victories and 166 points in the six-team tournament.
The Patriot boys finished third with 76 points behind New Haven (192) and Muncie Southside (100).
Juniors Maria Murphy and Katie Simmons, and senior Jordan McMillan all won three events to lead the Jay County girls.
Murphy shattered her career-best mark by nearly five feet as she won the discus at 127 feet, 2 inches. She also took the shot put at 39 feet, 3 inches with teammate Cara Garringer in second place.
Simmons led another one-two finish with a time of 5 minutes, 29 seconds in the 1,600 run ahead of senior Leah Wellman. The other victory for Simmons came with a time of 12:04 in the 3,200 run.
After taking a day off to rest a sore ankle Tuesday, McMillan returned to take the 100 dash in 13.2 and the 200 dash in 24.1.
Freshman Abigail Johnson posted a time of 2:32 to take the 800 run, and the Patriots were also first in the 4x400 relay.
The JCHS boys finished without a victory. Zach Cash was the runner-up in the 300 hurdles in 41.6, and Cade Price took second in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 2 inches.
The Patriots were also second in the 4x800 relay.

SA sweeps invite
BERNE — The Starfires came through to win their South Adams Invitational Friday — the boys with 139.5 points ahead of Snider (89) and the girls with 116 in front of Bellmont (102.3).
Joel Schmidt was the only SAHS athlete to win multiple events as he swept the hurdles. He took first place in the 110-meter event with a time of 15.81, and was first in the 300 hurdles in 41.7.
Sophomores Leah and Hannah Mitchell swept the throwing events for the South Adams girls. Leah won the shot put with a toss of 31 feet, 5 inches, and Hannah took the discus at 85 feet, 3 inches.
Hannah Moore was first in the girls 3,200 run in 12 minutes, 39 seconds, and Kristen Muselman won the 800 run in 2:31. Eric Isch took the 1,600 run for the boys team in 4:39.

Kahlig leads Fort
COLDWATER, Ohio — Kylie Kahlig picked up the only Tribe victory Friday at the Mercer County Knights of Columbus Invitational as the Fort Recovery girls scored 62 points to place fourth out of six teams.
The Indian boys, competing without Aaron Vagedes, did not score at the six-team meet while Celina won both the girls (182) and boys (159) competitions.
Kahlig’s victory came in the shot put, where she outdistanced the field by more than a foot to win at 34 feet, 8 ½ inches. She also posted a third-place effort in the 200-meter dash in 27.86 seconds.
Holly Brunswick turned in her best high-jump effort of the season at 5 feet, 4 inches to finish as the runner-up. She also placed third in the 100 hurdles in 17.08.
Nathan Heitkamp had the top individual finish for the boys team with a time of 10 minutes, 45 seconds for ninth place in the 3,200 run.[[In-content Ad]]
