JC girls win showdown with Bearcats (05/07/08)

MUNCIE - Now both teams know just how evenly matched they are.
The top two contenders for the sectional title - Jay County and Muncie Central high schools - battled Tuesday with the visiting Patriots edging the host Bearcats 62-61 in girls track.
The victory completed a perfect dual-meet season for JCHS at 11-0 and pushed its overall record to 24-1.
The Patriot boys had four one-two finishes, but fell short with a 69-62 loss to Muncie Central.
Senior Erika Hunt powered Jay County's girls with a pair of individual victories. She won the 300-meter hurdles by just two tenths of a second in 51.4 seconds, and was also first in the 100 hurdles in 16.27 with teammate Stephanie Wellman second.
Amanda Johnson and Leah Wellman each added one individual win while contributing to a relay victory. Johnson was first ahead of teammate Kylie Wellman in the 1,600 run in 5-minutes, 53 seconds, and Leah Wellman took the top spot in the 800 run in 2:36.2.
Johnson, Leah Wellman, Kari Hemmelgarn and Katie Butcher teamed to take the 4x800 relay in 10:58.
Aly Miller completed the Patriots' sweep of the distance races, taking the 3,200 run by more than a minute with a time of 12:34. Cara Garringer was first in the shot put at 31 feet, 9½ inches, and Sarah Westgerdes won the discus with a toss of 72 feet, 8 inches.
Dexter Shreve turned in another triple-win for the Jay County boys, who are now 18-10 overall and finished 5-4 in dual meets.
The junior took both jumping events, clearing the high jump bar at 6 feet even and winning the long jump at 19 feet, 4 inches. Derek Bartlett and Garrett Krieg were second in the high and long jumps respectively.
Shreve also held off a challenge from teammate Brandon Reynard in the 400 dash, winning by eight tenths of a second in 50.3. Reynard, Shreve, Sean Hatzell and Patrick Johnson teamed to win the 4x400 relay by just three tenths of a second in 3:40.2.
Lance Franklin led the Patriots' other one-two effort ahead of Mitchell Martyne in the shot put at 44 feet, 9½ inches. Reynard took the 110 hurdles easily in 15.4, and freshman Zach Cash posted a winnings time of 45.1 in the 300 hurdles.
Franklin, Reynard, Hatzell and Krieg finished the 4x100 relay in 44.7 for first place.
