RICHMOND - The Jay County girls golf team got off to a solid start Monday.
Although the Patriots finished eighth in a 13-team field at the Richmond Invitational, their score was much improved over last season's average. Jay County shot 420 - four behind Centerville and 26 ahead of Franklin County - to best their 2005 average by nearly 30 strokes.
Trisha Champ paced the Patriots with an 85, while Ashley Bunch and Rachel Osterholt each added personal-best scores. Champ had a birdie and six pars, including a stretch of four in five holes, and shot 41 on the back nine for her team-best score.
Bunch had a par on each nine, shooting her career-best nine-hole score (47) on the back nine for her career-best 18-hole score of 100. Osterholt had her lone par on the 364-yard, par-4 fourth hole on the way to her top career score of 123.
Miranda Denney had a par and four bogeys as she shot 112, and Brittany Lewis finished at 128.
Rockets split with SB
The Portland Rockets were one pitch away from a South Bend sweep Sunday, but had to settle for a split. The Rockets won the opening game 7--1, but fell to the visiting Senators 10-5 in game two.
Eric Van Matre carried Portland (24-11) through the opener as he scattered six hits before handing off to closer Mitch Waters, a Jay County High School graduate. Waters, fellow JCHS graduate Heath Williams and Derek Lehrman each had a pair of hits.
Nick Millspaugh had an RBI double in the second game to give the Rockets a 5-4 lead, but South Bend (29-7) tied the game with two outs in the seventh and owned the extra innings.
Williams had a pair of RBIs in the defeat.[[In-content Ad]]
