JC golfers end with big win

ANDERSON  — The Patriots won in commanding fashion in their last match of the season.
Evan Mathias was one of three Jay County High School golfers to shoot in the 30s Tuesday, helping the Patriots to a score of 155 and first place in a three-way meet at Killbuck Golf Course.
Host Daleville was second with a score of 193, and Muncie Southside finished third with 199.
Mathias, who earned match medalist honors with a 1-under 34, was 3-over par after the first three holes. He recovered to birdie the par-4 fourth and made eagle on the par-5 sixth to break even. He then made birdie on eight to cap off his final regular season match under par.
Jay Houck finished four strokes behind Mathias with a 38, and Austin Wendel had a 39. Houck and Wendel both birdied the par-4 second, and Houck closed his round with a birdie on the par-4 ninth.
Zach Fullenkamp rounded out the Patriots’ team score with a 44. Graham Haines shot a 49 for Jay County.
The Patriots tee off the sectional tournament at 9 a.m. Friday at Timber Ridge Golf Course in Bluffton.

Acme tops Marion
Cole Wendel went the distance on the mound Tuesday as the Fort Recovery Acme baseball team topped Marion Local 9-5.
Wendel scattered seven hits and struck out four, while giving up only three earned runs.

Nate Lochetefeld and three hits and two RBIs, and Cole Hull had a pair of hits, drove in two runs and scored twice. Wendel helped himself out at the plate by getting two hits.
Jackson Hobbs added an RBI single and Mitchell Stammen recorded a hit and two runs.

Bears sweep Spiders
BERNE — The Berne Bears 14-and-younger travel baseball team swept the Fort Wayne Spiders on Saturday at Harry F. Anderson Field.
Gavin Hare struck out 15 in a 5-3 victory in the first game, and the Bears kept the offense going in game two, winning 10-5.
Holton Hill and Hare sparked the Bears’ offense in both games.

Frontline wins big
Olivia Bright led a contingent of four Frontline Construction players to have multiple hits in a 14-1 victory over First Bank of Berne in Portland Junior League Minor softball.
Bright had three hits and scored twice. Lexie Ferguson, Aubrie Schwieterman and Kristen Wendel each had two hits and two runs.
Emily Byrum, Hayleigh Clatyon, Maebry Ninde and Kylie Morningstar all had hits for First Bank of Berne.[[In-content Ad]]
