JC golfers split as Gray shoots 1-under (05/24/06)

Local roundup

WINCHESTER — One score under par and the best team round of the year still left the Jay County boys golf team one stroke short of a double win Tuesday.

Adam Gray shot a 1-under 35, and the Patriots posted a 158. However, Union City won the three-team match at Winchester Golf Course with a 157. Randolph Southern was a distant third with 176.

Gray had a great round as the teams played the Pony nine at Winchester. He opened with three straight pars, then came up with one of Jay County’s four birdies as he played the 520-yard, par-5 fourth hole. He closed with five more pars for his 35.

Taylor Jenkinson was the match medalist, leading Union City with a 4-under 32. Carson Jenkinson added a 34.

C.J. Comer also had a strong start for the Patriots with pars sandwiching a birdie on the 138-yard, par 3 second hole. He added three pars in the final four holes for a 3-over 39.

Gray Suman and Josh Hall rounded out the team score with matching 42s. Chris Shannon shot 44, and Ben Gasca had a 47.

Graphic, Lions win

Austin Emerick came up with the big hit for Graphic Printing as it scored an 8-7 victory over Portland Elks Tuesday, and a pair of pitchers led Portland Lions to a 10-0 win over Portland Kiwanis in Portland Junior League Sandy Koufax League action.

Graphic led its game by three before Zach Ainsworth smacked a two-run home run in the third inning to tie it. But, Austin Emerick followed with a solo home run to give Graphic the lead back for good.

Lions grabbed a 7-0 lead in the first inning, and that was more than enough for its pitching staff. Shawn Homan and Kegan Comer combined to allow just three base runners in the shutout.[[In-content Ad]]
