JC grad receives law award (02/05/08)
Taking Note
Whitney L. Mosby, a 1995 graduate of Jay County High School, has received the Young Lawyer of the Year Award from the Indianapolis Bar Association for her leadership in the Young Lawyers Division.
Mosby works for Bingham McHale attorneys at law, where she concentrates in creditor's rights and bankruptcy matters.
She graduated from Indiana University in Indianapolis in 1999 and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She received her law degree from Indiana University School of Law, cum laude, in 2002. She had served as an associate editor on the Indiana Law Review.
She is a member of the Indianapolis Bar Association and was admitted to the Indiana Bar in 2002.
Mosby is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Hinkle, Portland.
Speech winners
Area students recently competed in the Optimist Oratorical Speech Contest with the topic "Why Me? Why Not?"
The first place winner in the girls' division at Redkey Elementary was Taylor Campbell, a fifth grade student and the daughter of Craig and Stacy Campbell. The runner-up was Morgan Brown, also a fifth grader and the daughter of Michael and Bonnie Brown.
First place winner in the boys' division was Charles Shreeve, the fifth grade son of Roger and Karen Shreeve.
The runner-up in the boys' division was Brody Barcus, a fifth grader and the son of Kevin and Wanda Barcus.
First place winner in the girls' division at Judge Haynes Elementary was Angelica McKibben. She is a fifth grade student and the daughter of Jake and Alma McKibben. The runner-up in the girls' division was fifth grader Haley Stone.
Winning first place in the boys' division was Levi Hummel, a fourth grade student and the son of Gene and Jennifer Hummel. The runner-up was Luke Rowles, a fifth grader.
Students from all seven elementary schools in Jay County will compete in the Jr. Oratorical Contest on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 6:30 p.m. at East Elementary.
Blood drive
The Hoosier Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross recently held a blood drive at the Jay Community Center in Portland.
Receiving gallon awards were Kelly Sautbine, Duane Monroe, Nathan Myers, Kenneth Newell, Elizabeth Skiver, Kenneth Keller, Rodney Sutton and Janet Barrett.
Others donating blood were Jeri Garringer, Jessica West, Evie Butcher, Jack Rouch, Phillip Cowan, Ronald Laux, Jessica Scott, Jack Houck, Michael Engels, Kenneth Wellman, Dale Turner, Connie Coleman, Kent Homan and Rodney Lautzenheiser.
Volunteering were Betsi Skiver, Wanetta Shreeve and Jay County REMC employees, who set up equipment and provided lunch for everyone.
Solo contest
Students from South Adams bands recently participated in the Indiana State School Music Association District Solo and Ensemble Contest at Eastbrook High School.
Students receiving gold ratings for solos were Stephen Horton, Kristen Muselman, Sydne Zuber, Blake Mellencamp, Brett Affolder and Tim Lehman.
Receiving gold ratings for ensembles were Karleigh Whetsel, Sydne Zuber, Mackenzie Jennings, Kelli Lehman, Katie Schaffer, Shelby Mellencamp, Sydney Tumbleson, Shiana Scott, Alyssa Anderson, Stephen Horton, Blake Mellencamp and Kirsten Wurster.
Students receiving silver ratings for solos were Tricia Crider and Kaitlin Tubbs.
